During the last Xbox Showcase last Sunday, we learnt a few things about the upcoming big titles. While most of the focus was on FPS and RPG titles, there were quite hefty amounts of players awaiting for the news about Forza Motorsport as well. Forza has started as a rival for Gran Turismo during its PS2 days. Motorsport featured a lot of similarities from semi-serious racing games at the time and was considered to be one of the strong candidates for a racing game which gave the best feeling for driving.

The time has passed and Forza has “driven” itself to the other directions. While the addition of the “Motorsport” name meant it was more serious of a racing game, the Horizon series provided a more arcade-y racing game for the fans. Once the Horizon series took off by a margin, Playground Games pushed the Horizon to its limit while Motorsport was left alone in the dust. When collaboration between Playground and Turn 10 Games announced the return of Motorsport, everyone was hyped. Finally, a solid evidence that simulation side of Forza still lives on, however, there are going to be some changes regarding to Motorsport when we get our hands on it.

Turn 10, in their recent post about what to expect from Forza Motorsport, said they are shifting the focus on the gameplay from simulation to CARpg. That is right, a genre that was long forgotten. What is CARpg, you might ask. It is basically a role-playing game mixed with racing and car elements such as races, showcases and taking care of your vehicle. There are not many games in the CARpg genre, but the most well-known game is Racing Lagoon for the PSX, made by Square Enix and released all the way back in 99 only for the Japanese region. Of course there are other obvious games such as Gran Turismo- 5 and onwards- Test Drive Unlimited and any game racing game that has an experience point system.

Forza Motorsports’ take on CARpg is going to be different from those, because each ignition, brake and even turns in the game will give you an experience point, thus allowing you to get a bond with your car and level it up, just like an RPG character. Turn 10 wants you to keep using your old cars and not ditch them after using it for one race. This way they are planning to give a more immersive side to racing, rather than what is usually employed in Forza Horizon, which is randomly crashing into a barnyard and finding a random vehicle.

Forza Motorsport is planned to be released on the 10th of October this year. If you are looking for an in-depth racing game, we highly advise you to check Motorsport when it's available.
