Insomniac's Secret Game Plan: Wolverine, Venom, and a Surprise Third Hero in 2026

After a cyberattack shook the studio, Insomniac is back on track with three Marvel projects in development—including a rumored Venom game set to launch before Wolverine.

Insomniac Games is gearing up for a big year in 2026, one of which includes Marvel's Wolverine, a project already known to many, but most of us are still unaware of the other two. This, however, is changing as more of their secrets are being leaked via developers' profiles. Not to mention leaks from inside the studio, a few official confirmations have helped us gain a better understanding of what's been happening behind the scenes. It's not just Wolverine either.

Recent information from LinkedIn and insiders suggests that Insomniac is currently working on three major games: Marvel's Wolverine, which has been in development for a long time is Spider-Man 3; and a third, as-yet-unrevealed game that many believe is a standalone Venom title.

Don't worry, Wolverine fans. After the cyberattack, Wolverine might not have been cut. Insomniac has reiterated in public that Wolverine is still alive and being developed. The studio even changed their official website to make the game stand out more, which shows that they're still moving forward even though they've had some setbacks in the past.

Wolverine was just added to PlayStation's list of key tentpole franchises that are expected to bring in a lot of money over the next few years, so even Sony seems sure. The news that a third game is being developed comes from an unexpected source: LinkedIn. A Spanish-language PlayStation news site saw that a current Insomniac developer had three projects in the works listed on their profile. Most fans thought that only Wolverine and Spider-Man 3 were being worked on, especially after seeing how badly Wolverine was hurt in the cyberattack. However, it appears that a third game is also in the works.

In a July 2023 interview, project director Erin Eberhardt stated that Insomniac was working on Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, and an unannounced game. This was a long time before the release of Spider-Man 2. Many people believed that the unannounced game might have been The Great Web, a rumored Spider-Man multiplayer game that was later rumored to have been canceled. However, after examining the data leaks and interviews more closely, it appears that the third game might be a standalone Venom game.

A rumor suggests that Venom is being developed and will be released in 2026. Reports indicate that the game will be larger than Miles Morales but smaller than Spider-Man 2. This would place it firmly in the mid-sized release category, which could be beneficial for PlayStation, as Wolverine is still being developed until 2027. It's also possible that Spider-Man 3 will come out on both the PS5 and the next-generation PS6, which is something Sony has done in the past when console generations overlap.

After the attack, Insomniac's plan seems to be to spread out their release dates. Miles Morales came out just two years after Spider-Man PS4, so a Venom game in 2026 fits in with the studio's normal schedule. It also gives them the space they need to improve Wolverine, which reportedly required major creative changes, including the departure of creative director Brian Horton.

When Brian Horton left PlayStation to work on Perfect Dark at Xbox, the project was canceled, and the studio that worked on it closed down. Now Horton doesn't have a job. He might return to Insomniac, but this is not certain. This highlights the instability of triple-A game development in 2025.

One thing is for sure: Insomniac isn't slowing down. Although the studio isn't generating as much noise as usual, it has at least three superhero-themed projects in the works, and that doesn't include any potential VR or experimental spin-offs.
