Konami has filed international trademarks for Zone of the Enders in both Europe and separately in Japan. With the company’s upcoming live broadcast on September 26, there may be a new announcement for the series. The last main entry was Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner released in 2003; this was later given an HD update in 2012 and fully remastered in 2018. This trademark could mean a true sequel, another re-release, or some kind of spin-off. The game series had several anime adaptations in the past.
Hideo Kojima had worked as a producer on the series and his influence can be felt on the game’s tone and setting. With Kojima’s departure from Konami in 2015, it is unclear how faithful future installments of Zone of the Enders would play. Many of Konami’s properties have been used for mobile and pachinko games more than console in the last few years. There may still be staff left who can continue the spirit of the series. There is also a possibility that the trademark is simply for legal reasons and no project may even be planned yet.
