PlayStation "Power Saving" Mode Hints at Next-Gen Handheld

Sony quietly preps PS5's most demanding titles for a smaller, less powerful device.

Sony just released a small but interesting update for the PlayStation 5: a new mode that saves power, which is already getting people's attention. The update, which was announced in July and will only work with a few games, is now finally coming out.

On the surface, it may not seem very interesting, but there's a bigger picture here that leads straight to Sony's rumored next-generation handheld. This function is very easy to use: when it's turned on, supported PS5 games will slow down to save power.

Sony makes it very clear: After this update, you may see a new setting called "power saver" in your menu. When turned on, games that are supported by the PlayStation 5 will slow down, which will let your PS5 use less power. Performance and power use will not be slowed down if the feature is not turned on or if games do not support it.

That's the catch. It's easy to see why gamers aren't too happy about this. Who would want to play AAA 4K games with less power? It makes sense for small independent games, but the games that are supported—Demon's Souls, Death Stranding 2, and Ghost of Yōtei—are not at all lighthearted. These are difficult, high-end experiences that you wouldn't usually skimp on. So why bother?

The PS5 itself might not be the answer. This is strategic planning that looks to the future. Consider the Xbox Series S, which was criticized for having less power; ironically, it put Microsoft in the perfect position to target the handheld market. Their games are already made to work best with less powerful hardware, which makes a portable system a lot more likely.

When it comes to Sony, things are different. AAA games for the PS5 were made to work with high-end 4K systems. They aren't designed to work best with gear that isn't as strong as the main system. That's where this new mode that saves power comes in.

Not only is it about saving energy, but it's also about building a bridge. Sony can start getting their games ready for a less powerful handheld without affecting the core experience on the standard PS5 by carefully scaling performance.

This move is good for everyone. Before a game comes out, first-party companies can make it work better on handheld devices. If third-party developers want to, they can add their games to the rumored handheld's launch library.

The idea of playing PS5 games on a portable device would have a hard time working without this choice. The power-saving mode is essentially laying the groundwork for a smooth handheld experience, which is a smart move that not many gamers are considering just yet.

To sum up, Sony isn't just putting a "Save Energy" button. They're quietly making their environment ready for the future.

Every change made here is a step toward ensuring that the PlayStation handheld won't just have a smaller screen when it launches; it will be a full PS5 experience on the go. And that's the real reason for this simple change.
