People Can Fly, the Polish studio behind Fortnite and titles like Outriders and Painkiller has contributed to some notable games, including the PC version of the original Gears of War: Judgment back in 2013. In December 2024, the studio did a massive layoff, which impacted a pair of their in-development games, Project Bifrost and Project Victoria. Yet, such a drop in their staff would not deter them from taking up another project, this time, that of the popular publisher Sony.
That's correct! People Can Fly has entered into a deal with Sony that will have the former work on a new game known as Project Delta based on the latter's IP. They formally announced this week the successful closure of a production agreement involving working with SIE on Project Delta's prototype.
This partnership between Sony and People Can Fly shall be in line with the work-for-hire agreement, i.e., merely that intellectual property rights in the work created shall vest in Sony, the commissioner, and not People Can Fly, the developer. Otherwise, little to no information is available on the scope of the suggested project.
With this positive development, the Gears of War studio is now ready to provide its services to the Japanese publisher for a game based on a new IP; this is surely yet another big-scale collaboration for the studio. Its imminent release title, rooted in an unannounced Sony-owned IP property, is just one of several moves by People Can Fly in the past few years.
Earlier in January 2025, People Can Fly was named one of the co-developers of the highly anticipated Gears of War: E-Day. In September 2024, they announced that Project Echo would be co-developed with South Korean publisher Krafton, publishers of PUBG: Battlegrounds.
Furthermore, People Can Fly has also been working on Project Gemini, which was unveiled in February 2023, for another gaming giant, Square Enix. With such important collaborations in progress simultaneously, the Polish studio appears to be busy in the next few years.
Among the ongoing projects, Gears of War: E-Day would be the most eagerly awaited one, especially because there isn't as much news available on the others just yet. As the studio had already worked on the action franchise owned by Xbox, it would be interesting to see how that would have played a role in getting the new one made as more of the game's trailers were progressively released.
