Superhero Games Including Marvel's Wolverine Might Get Delayed or Cancelled
With Wonder Woman's cancellation shocking fans, what other superhero games are at risk?

The recent cancellation of the highly anticipated Wonder Woman game and the closure of its studio, Monolith Productions, known for the innovative Nemesis system, has shaken the gaming industry. With this surprising announcement, there are growing fears about the fate of other prominent superhero games that are now being developed.
A more in-depth look at some of the most awaited superhero games finds that several are in danger of being canceled or massively delayed. While some may still be holding up, others seem to be in deep trouble. Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, one game that fans have been looking forward to for ages, takes players to a World War II adventure featuring Black Panther and Captain America.
Skydance New Media, a team led by Uncharted creator Amy Hennig, announced the creation of yet another game that might have already generated buzz in the gaming industry as early as 2022. However, over time, and by March 2025, concerns are already starting to arise regarding the game's development. A trailer for the storyline has already been released, but no trailer for the actual gameplay has been released yet.
This title was not seen during The Game Awards in December and this February for Sony's State of Play—two primed marketing opportunities. With time running out to deliver the game to the market before its slated launch, delay fears have continued to gather momentum, making it almost inevitable. While no official statements have been made, the lack of updates raises concerns about its current status.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, another highly anticipated superhero film, appears to be in serious trouble. The game, developed by Black Forest Games and published by THQ Nordic, was intended to provide a God of War-style combat experience based on the acclaimed graphic novel. However, Black Forest Games, owned by the beleaguered Embracer Group, had to lay off half of its development crew. Hopes for the project were momentarily sparked when a studio executive hinted at an update in response to fan requests, but no new information was released.
With no official confirmation that development is still underway, many people suspect the project has been discreetly canceled. The release date of Dec. 31, 2049, set by IGN at least indicates something strange. This situation is similar to Transformers: Reactivate, another anticipated title that has seemingly vanished. Fans have also expressed concerns about the future of Marvel's Wolverine, which is being developed by Insomniac Games.
The game, which was first revealed in 2021, has yet to be given a release date, and its production has been hindered by a 2023 cyberattack that resulted in a large leak of the game's content. Following the leak, Insomniac Games experienced layoffs and saw key members of the development team, including its creative director, leave the project. Despite these difficulties, Insomniac has promised fans that Wolverine is still in active development. The game was absent from the most recent State of Play, prompting speculation regarding its release date.
Industry sources, including journalist Jeff Grubb, have speculated that Sony is planning a PlayStation Showcase in the coming months, which might include an official update. Realistically, Marvel's Wolverine is unlikely to be released before 2026. While delays are irritating, many see them as a good omen, allowing Insomniac to build the game without the hurried deadlines that purportedly hampered Marvel's Spider-Man 2.
The development landscapes for these superhero games are diverse. While Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra appears to be on schedule for a 2025 release despite minimal public footage, TMNT: The Last Ronin is unclear owing to huge studio layoffs. Marvel's Wolverine is still in development despite past setbacks, and fans are ready for more information. As the business evolves, participants remain optimistic about the successful launch of these titles.
