Board Design

The Maximus Z890 Hero features an understated black and silver color scheme, with the Republic of Gamers logo emblazoned on the rear I/O cover. Polymo lighting adds subtle accent illumination, and the large "HERO" branding at the center gives it a bold but refined appearance.

Every element—from the reinforced PCIe slots to the robust heatsinks—has been sculpted for both form and function, ensuring that your build looks as good as it performs.

CPU Socket & VRM

At its core is the new LGA 1851 socket, compatible with the latest Core Ultra CPUs while maintaining the exact mounting dimensions as LGA 1700. A rubber‑tipped latch prevents cooler damage and makes installation smoother. Surrounding the socket is a 22+1+2+2 power stage array, each capable of delivering up to 110 A.

These stages use ProCool II connectors, microfine alloy chokes, and premium metallic capacitors, all cooled by three interconnected heatsinks to ensure stable power delivery under heavy overclocking.

Top‑Edge Connections

In the top‑left corner, you'll find dual metal‑reinforced 8‑pin EPS connectors for CPU power. Along the top edge are four fan/pump headers: two for CPU fans, one for AIO pumps, and one general fan header. A two‑digit POST code display helps with quick diagnostics if boot issues arise.

DDR5 Slots

Four reinforced DDR5 DIMM slots support up to 192 GB of memory at speeds up to 9200 MHz. ASUS's new "NitroPath" design loops termination pins to the ends of the slots, reducing signal reflection and unlocking additional overclocking headroom. In internal tests, NitroPath delivered noticeably higher stability across various memory configurations.

Front‑Edge Connections

Along the right edge, you'll find a three‑pin ARGB header, a FlexKey button, the 24‑pin ATX power connector, and an 8‑pin PCIe power port. Two USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and one USB 3.2 Gen 2 headers provide up to 60 W of front‑panel power when the auxiliary PCIe cable is connected, otherwise limited to 27 W.

Further down are a USB 3.2 Gen 1 header, four SATA 6 Gb/s ports, and a SlimSAS connector for U.2 and U.3 SSDs up to 60 TB. All are mounted at 90° to keep cables clear of expansion cards.

Bottom Connections

The lower edge houses HD audio, an alternate PCIe mode switch, Thunderbolt 4 header, three ARGB and three fan headers, an additional USB 3.2 Gen 1 header, two USB 2.0 ports, a water‑pump header, a retry button, and front‑panel headers.

M.2 Slots

Five M.2 slots are hidden beneath two heatsinks. The top heatsink cools one PCIe 5.0 SSD and slides off easily using the M.2 Q‑Release tab. Beneath it lies a PCIe 5.0 slot; the remaining four slots—two PCIe 5.0 and two PCIe 4.0—are covered by a larger heatsink removable via four screws.

Each slot features a toolless M.2 Q‑Latch, letting you lock and unlock drives with a simple press or pull.

Expansion Slots

You get one reinforced PCIe 5.0 x16 slot, one PCIe 4.0 x16 slot (x4 electrical), and one PCIe 4.0 x1 slot. ASUS's new PCIe Slot Q Release Slim lets you remove your graphics card by pulling it at an angle—no button required—freeing board space and simplifying maintenance.

Rear I/O

All I/O ports sit behind a pre‑installed shield. Connectivity includes Clear CMOS and BIOS Flashback buttons, HDMI, 2.5 GbE and 5 GbE LAN, four USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type‑A, two Thunderbolt 4 Type‑C, four USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type‑A, two additional USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type‑A, one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type‑C, Wi‑Fi 7 antenna headers, and analog audio jacks.

Thunderbolt Share support enables ultra‑fast transfers between two systems without a hub.

Backplate & Cooling

A full‑metal backplate adds rigidity and assists passive cooling of the PCB. Combined with the heatsinks and reinforced components, it helps maintain low temperatures even under sustained loads.

RGB Lighting

Polymo lighting on the rear I/O cover glows behind the ROG logo, offering customizable colors and effects. While some may prefer more extensive illumination, the subdued approach blends well in both minimalist and RGB‑heavy builds.
