Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Guide | How To Play Verso

Here’s everything you need to know on how to play Verso in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Game Guide by Ornstein on  Apr 29, 2025

In this Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 guide, you will look at Verso and how to play him in combat. At first glance, he’s one of the easier characters to play in the game—he’s pretty straightforward with his perfection meter—yet he has a lot of nuances and gains significant benefits from using certain skills at specific ranks.

When you first start playing, these nuances aren’t inherently obvious, and the game does not explain important aspects of the perfection gauge.

In this guide, you will learn what skills to use, how to get the most out of the perfection gauge, which weapons to equip, and how to choose Picto and Lumina—all without delving into his story.

Verso Perfection Explained

Verso’s perfection gauge increases his damage as it improves, ranking up from D to S. You raise the gauge by dealing damage, parrying, dodging, and counterattacking, and it caps out at rank S—where you sell the most damage.

The gauge advances based on the number of hits you land rather than the raw damage dealt: roughly three hits to rank from D to C, five hits from C to B, seven hits from B to A, and about fifteen hits from A to S.

Parries, dodges, and counterattacks each count as a hit, so you may see your gauge rise even when it’s not your turn. Conversely, if Verso takes any damage, you will drop by one full rank, regardless of damage shields or mitigation, so avoiding every hit through perfect timing is critical.

Free-aim shots and base attacks also contribute to your perfection gauge—each free-aim shot grants one perfection—making the strategy of unloading all your AP into free-aim shots followed by combo-enhanced base attacks a viable way to climb the ranks quickly.

Verso Skills

When selecting Verso’s skills, you should look for those with multiple hits, as they accelerate your perfection gauge the fastest. You should also examine each skill’s rank-based bonuses since some skills become significantly more efficient or powerful at certain ranks.

For example, Phantom Stars costs 9 AP but only 5 AP when used at rank S, dealing massive damage to all enemies and making it ideal for saving until you reach S.

Assault Zero delivers five hits and gains increased damage at B rank, while each critical hit generates extra perfection—an excellent choice for crit-focused builds.

Light Holder costs only 4 AP to deliver five hits of medium light damage and automatically raises your rank by one; it also grants bonus AP when used at A rank, helping bridge the long gap between A and S.

Strike Storm uses your weapon’s element for five hits, generates two additional perfections per critical hit, and auto-ranks you up; it deals increased damage at C rank, making it a powerful follow-up after a few free-aim shots.

Leadership, costing 3 AP, reduces Verso’s rank to grant 2–4 AP to allies (plus one more AP at C rank), which is best used early in combat when you’re at lower ranks to flood your team with AP without sacrificing too much perfection.

You will need to adapt your rotation on the fly since unexpected parries or counters may push you into a new rank and change the most efficient skill to use next.

Weapons

Verso’s weapon choices can completely change his combat flow. Abysseram gives you a constant 50 percent damage boost from rank D onward at the cost of lower S-rank potential; it also increases base attack damage, supporting a free-aim-then-base-attack strategy and forgiving you for early mistakes.

Confuso applies burn on light-damage critical hits, triples burn stacks when applying Mark, and boosts burn damage up to 300 percent at S rank—pair this with high crit chance and multi-hit light skills for devastating burn combos.

Cruel Ram prevents rank loss when hit by Powerless enemies and grants extra perfection per hit on them; at level 20, it applies Powerless on counterattack, letting you build perfection even when you take hits.

Colt AM stops rank loss from damage (healing causes rank loss instead), grants +2 AP on counterattack, and grants one rank on counterattack; it supports aggressive hit-and-revive tactics and ensures you have plenty of AP for big skills.

Deleram starts you at B rank with half health, heals you when you base attack and boosts damage at B rank—allowing you to nearly top off your health via free-aim and combo-enhanced base attacks on the first turn.

Dual ESO grants an immediate extra base attack, which synergizes with Combo Attack 1 and 3 for rapid perfection gains; at higher levels, it further boosts base attack perfection and damage.

Saressu transfers half of Verso’s perfection bonus to all allies (you forgo the bonus), increases perfection gains by one, and reduces support skill AP costs by 1, making it ideal for party-wide damage support when teamed with strong allies.

Picto and Lumina Recommendations

When choosing Picto and Lumina for Verso, you should focus on boosts to Combo Attack 1 and Combo Attack 3 to maximize your free-aim base-attack hits. Effects that grant AP on free-aim, burn on free-aim, or marking on free-aim also complement his playstyle.

If you favor a burn-stacking build, seek double-burn or critical-burn enhancements. Because Verso rarely suffers from AP shortages—especially if you embrace the free-aim base-attack strategy—you can prioritize offensive and perfection-synergy bonuses over AP management.

Attribute Allocation

Your attribute choices should align with your weapons. You will typically prioritize Vitality for health-based abilities and survivability as you learn enemy patterns, Agility to act sooner and more often in combat, and Luck for critical-hit rate—key to many of Verso’s skills and gear bonuses.

Might and Defense are secondary and can be adjusted based on specific weapon effects, but a blend of Vitality, Agility, and Luck generally yields the best results.

Final Notes

Playing Verso effectively requires understanding the math behind the perfection gauge—how many hits you need to reach the next rank—and adapting your tactics as your rank shifts mid-combat due to parries, dodges, or counters.

Focusing on multi-hit skills, using rank-based awards, choosing weapons that fit your style, and making the best Picto and Lumina choices will help you get the most out of Verso. Try out different rotations and builds to see what works best for you. As you learn how to handle his perfection-driven battle, you can make your strategy even better.
