God of War Ragnarök | How To Upgrade Blades of Chaos To Level 9

Here's how to upgrade your Blades of Chaos to level 9 in God of War Ragnarök.

Game Guide by Nine_toes on  Oct 25, 2024

You will have to find Chaos Flames in order to upgrade the Blades of Chaos all the way to level 9. This is just like other resources you might need to upgrade other weapons, such as the Leviathan Axe and Draupnir Spear. Most of the Chaos Flames will be unlocked organically by story progression, but three are locked within side content.

If you do not wish to have spoilers regarding side quests or how to find hidden areas, you may want to visit this guide at a later time. You will also want to finish the favor The Crucible and the favor The Scent of Survival, as both of these play an important role in upgrading your gear.

First Chaos Flame

To get your Blades to level 7, head to Muspelheim after completing The Crucible favor. Although the challenges here can be tough, especially on higher difficulties, the first six challenges are manageable. After finishing these, you’ll find the Chaos Flame inside a Nornir chest located in front of the shop run by Brok and Sindri.

Second Chaos Flame

For the next Chaos Flame, you’ll need to complete The Scent of Survival favor, which takes you to a hidden area called The Crater in Vanaheim. After entering this area, begin the Return of the River favor. Use an elevator to get to the back of the zone, where you can burn some overgrown ferns and spin a wheel to release water from a dam. Once the water fills the crater, head over to the sinkholes, where you’ll find a Berserker Tombstone. Defeating the Berserker here will reward you with another Chaos Flame.

Third (and Final) Chaos Flame

Upgrading your Blades to level 9 requires a bit more effort. You’ll need to locate and defeat six Draugr Holes scattered across the realms. Each Draugr drops a Chaos Spark, and once you have all six sparks, they will form into a final Chaos Flame. Here's where to find them:

Applecore, Svartalfheim: If you don’t have the nearby Mystic Gateway unlocked, start from the Aurvangar Wetlands and take the ferry to the Althjof’s Rig, then use the elevator to reach the mines.

  • Lake of Nine, Midgard: Look near King’s Grave, and the wolves will make this a quick journey from any Mystic Gateway.
  • The Crater, Vanaheim: Follow the same path you took to get the second Chaos Flame and cross the river to find the Draugr Hole.
  • The Abandoned Village, Vanaheim: Head back to this area and change the time of day if a wooden barrier is blocking your path.
  • The Barrens, Alfheim: This area requires completing the Secrets of the Sands favor to uncover the Draugr Hole.
  • Bay of Bounty, Svartalfheim: You’ll find the final Draugr Hole near the Watchtower, close to one of Odin’s ravens.

With this, you’ll be able to max out the Blades of Chaos. I can’t lie; the blades are still my favorite weapon, even though the axe is excellent.
