GPD Win 5 is one of the best portable gaming PCs you can buy right now. It has high-performance APUs that make it function very well in a small, portable package. The design is based on the PSP and PS Vita, and it mixes new technology with a familiar look and feel.

There are two APU variants, allowing you to choose between maximum performance and more efficient, lower TDP gaming.

First Impressions

When, we first got my hands on the GPD Win 5, the size and build immediately stood out. While it retains the PSP/PS Vita-style layout of the Win 3 and Win 4, the Win 5 is noticeably larger. A standout feature is the battery connector on the bottom, highlighting GPD's clever approach of using an external, detachable, and replaceable battery.

The device comes with an 80Wh battery and a 180W charger, allowing you to charge the system while playing.

GPD also includes a battery extension cable. This allows you to place the battery in a pocket or bag, reducing the weight in your hands. Thumb screws keep the cable securely in place, so you don't have to worry about it disconnecting mid-game.

Input and Connectivity

GPD Win 5 is loaded with versatile I/O options. Additionally, there's a USB4 port operating at 40Gb/s, which enables the connection of an eGPU. The barrel jack handles the 180W power supply, allowing the battery to charge while powering the device.

You also get a full-size USB 3.2 port, a 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C port, and a mini SSD slot, also known as a 1517 SSD. These tiny SSDs are roughly the size of a microSD card and come in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB variants, with sequential read speeds of up to 3,700MB/s.

There's also a microSD card slot for extra storage. Without the battery, the Win 5 feels surprisingly light, and attaching the 80Wh battery is quick thanks to a simple clip system. A fingerprint sensor doubles as the power button, adding an extra layer of convenience.

Ergonomics and Controls

GPD has clearly put thought into the ergonomics. Even with the 80Wh battery attached, the portable is easy to carry for extended periods of time thanks to its rounded corners and strategically placed palm rests.

It is perfect for fighting games and platformers due to its precise control, provided by Hall-based analog sticks, trigger locks, and a D-pad borrowed from the Vita.

You also have flexibility in controller mode, allowing you to navigate Windows using the touch screen, keyboard buttons, or even the optical mouse. Conductive pads under the face buttons enhance responsiveness, while the hall-based analog sticks offer smooth and accurate movement.

Display and Size Comparison

The Win 5 has a 7-inch 1080p display with a 120Hz variable refresh rate. This is slightly larger than the Win 4 and ensures smooth visuals across all game types. The larger screen offers a more immersive experience without compromising portability.

Performance and Specifications

There are two APU options. The high-end Max Plus 395 features 16 cores and 32 threads, making it one of the most powerful handheld integrated graphics processing units (iGPUs) on the market. The Max 385, which I tested, features 8 cores and 16 threads, providing excellent performance at a lower TDP.

It features a base clock of 3.6GHz and can boost up to 5.0GHz. The Radeon 8050SI GPU features 32 compute units based on RDNA3.5, operating at a clock speed of up to 2,800MHz.

With a 256-bit interface, memory can go up to 32GB of RAM with transfer speeds of 8,000MT/s. The storage options are 1TB to 4TB, and they come pre-installed, so there's plenty of room for games and apps. The system supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, and comes with Windows pre-installed, although SteamOS can also be installed. With the battery attached, the Win 5 weighs 1,300g, but the weight is balanced, so it still feels comfortable to hold.

Gaming Performance

Win 5 did quite well in tests with a wide range of games. Street Fighter 6 used only 14W of battery consumption and operated at 1080p on medium settings at 60fps. With FSR balance set at 25W TDP and Borderlands 4 set to medium, the game ran at above 60fps. At 1080p high settings with FSR quality, Ragnarok ran at over 70fps with a 30W TDP. With frame generation turned on, it ran at 95fps.

With an 18W TDP, GPD Win 5 produced over 100fps at 1080p high settings on Forza Horizon 5. Max 385 chip mode showed exceptional efficiency at lower temperatures, outperforming the Z1 Extreme and Z2 Extreme at 25W TDP, achieving 68fps as opposed to 42 and 46fps.

Battery Life

Battery life varies depending on TDP and the type of game. At 50% screen brightness, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, indie games at 10W TDP drew only 9W, allowing more than 8 hours of playtime on the 80Wh battery. At 25W TDP, the draw reached 37W, giving around 2 hours of gameplay. At 45W TDP, battery life drops to about 1 hour and 10 minutes. These first results show that the smartphone does a good job of balancing performance and battery life.

Final Thoughts

GPD Win 5 is a powerful, portable, and well-designed device. Its removable 80Wh battery, high-refresh-rate screen, and several I/O possibilities make it a great portable for gamers. Comfortable to hold with well-designed controls and impressive thermal management, it delivers excellent performance across a wide range of games.

With options to customize APUs, storage, and RAM, the Win 5 is a solid choice for both casual and hardcore gamers alike.
