Among the many challenges that may confront you in Hollow Knight: Silksong, the battle with Sister Splinter in Shellwood is one of the most difficult early-game difficulty spikes.

In this guide, I will help you beat the Splinter Sister in Hollow Knight: Silksong.
How to Get to the Boss Arena
Unlike smaller foes and environmental hazards players are likely accustomed to by this point, Sister Splinter combines a compact arena, incapacitating attacks, and hostile enemy summons that can surprise the unsuspecting.
Sister Splinter's lair is located in Shellwood, an ominous and overgrown biome that features lots of dense foliage, spiked barriers, and twisting corridors.
Navigating to her room can be a challenge in itself, but entering the arena itself immediately presents constraints: you're in a small, tight arena with destructible barriers in the middle but solid ones on the sides.
These changes to the environment limit your mobility, forcing you to adapt to the narrow vertical and horizontal windows of movement the area has to offer. While some of the thorns and vines can be destroyed, others are immobile, affecting the rhythm of the fight.
About the Fight with the Sister Splinter
The fight begins as Sister Splinter does her attack, where she uses her massive claws that slightly glow white before swiping down from above. The tell for this is the glint and dust trails that the descending claws leave behind, marking where they will land, giving you the chance to dodge.
Even though these attacks deal 2 masks of damage, they are telegraphed and can be avoided with good positioning and quick dashes if you can catch onto the telegraphs. Jumping and weaving between the claws and landing retaliatory blows on her body is the primary loop in this phase.

Yet the real challenge arises when Sister Splinter resorts to summoning. At certain points in her health bar, she summons additional enemies that fall from the ceiling.
You will notice faint smoke cues along the ceiling to anticipate where the summons will appear. When left on their own, the summoned creatures quickly spread around the arena, wreaking havoc that combines with Splinter's own attacks to pin you.
The best strategy is to drop whatever you're doing and make a run for the summons the moment they appear. Fighting them at spawn allows you to eliminate them before they have a chance to get going.
If you're directly beneath a smoke cue to start with, you can usually get two or three shots in right away, finishing off the minion before it's even a threat.
Interestingly enough, Sister Splinter herself can damage or even kill her own summons if they wander into the areas of her attacks. While this is occasionally helpful, it is at best not consistent, and players should never count on it happening.
Instead, treat the adds as the highest-priority targets throughout the fight. The longer they are up, the greater the risk of losing control of the battlefield.
Later, as the fight progresses, vines begin to sprout from the ground of the arena, adding another layer of complexity. These vines spread unpredictably, creating temporary obstacles that damage you when you hit them, restricting movement.
Standing still amidst groups of vines is often safer than panicked running and crashing into them. Cutting down reachable vines as quickly as possible is vital to having breathing space, especially before the next wave of summons arrives.
Health management is also important. Sister Splinter's fight has brief moments of reprieve, such as after the death of a summon or whenever she pauses for breath between claw swipes.

Use these to heal strategically. Trying to heal in the middle of her summoning waves or whilst vines are crawling is usually a mistake that gets you caught out. A recommended tactic is to focus on nuking a summoned target quickly, then take the small window to recover lost health right after.
The pacing of the battle is laborious. Just when it's beginning to be manageable, Sister Splinter ramps up her assault with yet more vines and more regular summons, so the final stretch is the busiest.
Players need to resist the temptation to tunnel vision on her health bar; survival hinges on controlling the adds and clearing the vines. If you keep the battlefield under control, you'll find yourself naturally taking damage on her.
Which tools you pick and which Silk skill you use can also change the way the fight goes. Gear that offers wider area coverage or allows for faster follow-up attacks is invaluable when battling summons, since destroying them as fast as possible makes the fight a whole lot easier.
Tools that grant mobility improvements, such as longer dash distance or reduced recovery time, are also extremely helpful given the tight spaces. Healing tools provide you with an extra safety net, however, and they're only worthwhile if you can find regular windows to cast them. Builds that blend survivability and crowd control tend to work best overall.
A less obvious but valuable lesson from the fight is positioning at the start of each summon phase. If you notice smoke cues popping up, get under one immediately.
This way, you guarantee that at least one of the summoned enemies dies before it's active, reducing the potential chaos significantly. You can then hop or dash across the arena to deal with the remainder, maintaining control of the pace.
Persistence is key. Sister Splinter is purposely designed to act as a skill ceiling. A boss that's designed to test your ability to juggle multiple mechanics while under stress.
Players who try to brute-force the fight by ignoring summons or rushing her health will fail almost every time. The fight needs discipline: attack only when safe, kill adds as fast as possible, and clear vines frequently.
Every mistake opens you up to damage, but with practice, these waves of enemies and traps start to show a predictable rhythm that you can get a hold of.
Once you have these rhythms ingrained, the fight shifts from being frenzied to methodical, and the previously impossible-sounding task gives way to a satisfying triumph.

Defeating Sister Splinter gives you access to progress deeper into Shellwood, but also serves as a benchmark of your skill growth. By overcoming her type of close combat, you prove that you can keep up with Silksong's in-game skill curve.
The Sister Splinter battle is a masterclass in chaos. If you are well prepared with smart positioning and focus on the true threats, you can overcome the tight arena and the summons to beat the Sister Splinter.
