The key tool for finding artifacts is the Echo Detector, so ensure you have it equipped before heading out. If you're using a mouse and keyboard, press 7 to equip or stow the Echo Detector. On a controller, use the radial menu, or on a PC, hold Tab to access the menu and select the Echo Detector on the left. The key to equipping it will be displayed—for example, Q on PC.
Artifacts are usually found near Anomalies. When your Echo Detector activates in proximity to one, it signals the presence of an artifact. Approach carefully and use the detector to pinpoint the artifact’s exact location. Stay close, and the artifact will eventually materialize.
Artifact spawn points can slightly shift if you reload a save, but their type remains fixed. For instance, Mama’s Beads always appears in the Magnetic Cave in the Lesser Zone. Although retrieving it might require persistence (and maybe some burns), it will eventually show up.
Once picked up, artifacts are stored in your inventory, where you can review their effects. Most offer valuable buffs, such as increased bleeding resistance, but they also emit constant radiation. Early in the game, this makes them harder to use effectively, though they become increasingly practical later.
To equip an Artifact, you need armor with specific slots. In the beginning, you might have only one slot in your armor, but you can go to the technician to have it upgraded for additional slots. Visit the armor menu to equip the artifacts in the slots as required by your needs.
You’ll need gear or other Artifacts that provide radiation resistance to mitigate Artifact Radiation. As you progress, you’ll encounter radiation-reducing artifacts that can counterbalance radiation-heavy ones. Late-game armor often offers enhanced radiation protection, allowing you to use powerful artifacts without relying on consumables like vodka or anti-radiation meds.
Random Artifact spawns in the wild are rare; the majority are tied to Anomalies, so rely on your Echo Detector to guide you. With this tool, you’ll be able to track down artifacts efficiently.
With all this being said, you should now have an understanding of how to locate, equip, and manage Artifacts and mitigate their radiation effects in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl.
