Ubisoft has finally given fans an update on the long-awaited Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake, and by the looks of things, it's not good. If you aren't familiar with the project, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake has been in development for roughly 3 years and has had numerous delays and setbacks during its development, and is still far from release.
We first learned of the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake during the 2020 Ubisoft Forward event. The game was met with a less than expected welcome, with the game being criticized heavily due to how underwhelming and lackluster its graphics were. However, the developers were quick to address these claims and reassured fans that the graphics would look far superior in the final game. However, it would seem that things would only get worse for the remake as it went through multiple delays, there were even reports that it had entered a stage of development hell. The game's development would eventually be taken over by Ubisoft Montreal from Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune, this did mean that the game was delayed indefinitely.
Despite being delayed indefinitely and players being refunded for their pre-orders, Ubisoft released a statement that reassured players that the game wasn't canceled, but failed to provide any further information. This has outraged many fans of the series, who have been demanding a return of the Prince of Persia games. The game's current director and producer, Michael McIntyre and Jean-Francois Naud, released a more in-depth statement in hopes of cooling the flames of angry fans.
In the statement shared on the Official Ubisoft site, Jean-Francois Naud said “We’re in conception right now. Since we took over the project, we've been looking at feedback from the community and finding our own way of delivering the game. Now, we're building up the team, defining the priorities, putting prototypes together, testing elements, and looking at how we can include community feedback in the development as well”
The most likely cause for the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time remake's development hell could be due to Ubisoft shifting their business trajectory and shelving multiple projects, to focus on more major titles such as the Assassin Creed series, which the company intends to increase the team size by over 40%. At least Ubisoft has given confirmation on the state of the remake, however, fans are still understandably displeased by it.
