Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Sandfall Interactive's biggest hit, is getting a lot of attention again, this time because of the Nintendo Switch 2. The French studio that developed one of the most exciting RPGs in a long time has made it clear that they are not against transferring their game to Nintendo's next-generation hybrid platform.

When asked explicitly about the prospect, the team said they have some options that they will look into, but they can't say for sure what they are right now. That careful answer can seem like it doesn't mean anything, but it does. Studios rarely comment until talks are already underway.

The Switch 2 seems like a good fit for a game like Expedition 33. Fans have already called the title a modern masterpiece. It would add to Nintendo's launch timeframe. It would also allow many new people to see it, as some may have missed it on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

One thing that makes Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 stand out is its name. Sandfall didn't just make another Western RPG like The Witcher or Starfield. Instead, they took their ideas straight from Japanese masters of the genre, such as Persona, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Fire Emblem. The end product is a turn-based game that seems both familiar and new, like the best art from Japan, but with its own unique voice.

For a lot of RPG fans, this was the Western studio that finally got it. Critics appreciated how it combined beautiful graphics, emotionally driven text, and gameplay that maintained tradition while introducing subtle changes. Famitsu even gave it good grades, which is not an easy feat for a Western game to achieve when aiming to appeal to Japanese players.

The game is already a huge hit with fans who enjoy playing long, story-driven games, as it features more than 80–90 hours of content. But being able to take it with you—playing Clair Obscur on the way to work or slogging through boss fights away from the TV—would change the way people play it. A Switch 2 version wouldn't merely be a port; it would mean something.

Sales momentum is another crucial strategic consideration. At launch, Expedition 33 sold more than three million units, which is a lot for a new IP. But sales have slowed down, like they do for most single-player games, as the market moves on to newer ones. A Switch 2 version might spark new interest, grow the community, and give the game a better foothold in Japan, where handheld gaming is still popular.

That's why it's not a question of if but when. The most plausible timeline points to 2026. Sandfall is a tiny crew, and they have to carefully consider how to transfer their games because they have to split their resources between possible DLC, sequels, and other projects, including rumors of merchandise and even movie adaptations. They might even look for a publishing partner to help them out.

Don't get me wrong: Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Switch 2 is not just likely; it's going to happen. The chance is too great, and the fit is just right.

Nintendo knows how powerful RPGs with status are. They always make a big deal out of third-party games of this level that come to their platform. If Expedition 33 happens, expect to see it announced in a Direct as a big deal.

This move would also help Sandfall's reputation as a global leader in RPG creation, not only as a breakthrough studio. They have done a better job than most Western studios at bridging the cultural and stylistic gap. They would be sending a strong statement that they are here to stay by putting their flag on Nintendo's next big system.

And for fans, it means one thing: being able to play one of the best RPGs of this generation on a small screen.
