Metroid Prime 4 Leak Teases New Worlds and Secret Allies

Unlisted Nintendo ads, information about art books, and new magazine translations leave people excited—and confused—about Samus Aran's biggest mission yet.

Nintendo fans were shocked this week when Metroid Prime 4, the long-awaited sci-fi epic, came back in a big way. Many people are speculating about what might be one of the Nintendo Switch 2's most popular launch games. This is due to ads on YouTube that aren't obvious, new magazine leaks, and translations that don't align.

Before being swiftly removed, two unlisted Nintendo Switch 2 holiday advertisements featuring Metroid Prime 4 reportedly surfaced online, giving fans a preview of new locations and boss battles. Although these videos were not intended for public consumption, they nevertheless sparked interest on the internet.

Along with these leaks, numerous artbook teasers and translated excerpts from Japan's Nintendo Dream magazine were also released. These gave us more information about the story, the characters, and the beautiful places. While fans were still trying to figure out what they had seen of Samus Aran fighting huge alien enemies in a huge frozen cave, new translated text hinted at environments that are much more interesting than the empty deserts shown in previous trailers.

There are forests, old ruins, flowing lava caves, and high-tech buildings on the galaxy-spanning map. This suggests that Metroid Prime 4 could feature the largest world in the series to date.

The buzz started when a Portuguese translation of Nintendo Dream's article mentioned some interesting aspects, such as a mysterious "Ace Rex" character who could change sides depending on the player's choice and a "Viola motorcycle" with new powers. It seemed like a dangerous new direction for the Metroid formula. However, new translations from Shine Sparkers and Source Gaming reveal that much of this is incorrect and that some details were lost in translation or misunderstood.

The most recent fixed version states that the focus isn't on RPG-style choice systems or motorcycle tricks, but on the different worlds and how they tell stories through their environments.  Viola is an essential tool for Samus because it allows her to move around extensively, but not in an open-world manner.  There are still locked paths, puzzles in the environment, and the same old loop of exploring and finding better items.

This careful correction from Shine Sparkers highlights a common issue in the gaming world: mistranslations that can fuel hype.  Universal Nintendo, the company that performed the first translations, stated that they stood by their work and that native speakers had reviewed it. However, the community investigated the matter and even removed the original article, which only added to the confusion about what was actually lost or gained in translation.

One of the new magazine scans that caught my eye was a dark, snowy area with big, curved rocks and glowing light patterns that could be a portal. The way the picture is set up and its size suggest that Metroid Prime 4 will feature both tight tunnels and expansive open spaces. People even saw patterns in the structure that resembled circles circling around a central light source. This gave rise to ideas about places that are linked by teleportation hubs.

People who compared the new scans to footage from earlier trailers saw rock arches, misty valleys, and zip lines that could all be part of one big biome. Some people even suggest that these caves could be the primary means of transportation, with portals or environmental changes linking different areas. That one idea alone makes the game really fun to play.

Could Metroid Prime 4 finally find a way to combine the traditional "locked-door" progression with a model for exploring a semi-open world? Nintendo hasn't confirmed anything yet, but the pictures suggest a new version of the formula that builds on what has come before, while also opening up new possibilities.

Aside from the beautiful settings, the most interesting thing about these new translations is the game's moral gray areas. The scans say that "enemies stand in your way, but so do allies." This suggests a story with many layers and changing loyalties. The Space Pirates, who have been enemies for a long time, will be back. However, Samus's mission will be more challenging due to a new alien species known as the "Lour" (or "Leour," depending on the translation).

People say that the Lour are a strange group of people who grant Samus's wish but don't tell him what they really want. In earlier appearances, they resembled ghosts, either deceased for a long time or existing in a ghostly state. However, the new art shows at least one Lour in a real-life form, meaning they are alive, intelligent, and capable of communicating with other people.

In the Metroid games, it's not common to see allies who are alive. You usually see races that are long gone, though.

It's even more interesting how the Lour and the drone-like machines in the ads are connected. The two drones have similar design features, like their unique two-pronged "feet." This makes it likely that the Lour made them. The magazine says that these creatures sometimes attack Samus, which makes the idea that the Lour aren't all good even stronger. Could these old builders be both her friends and her foes?

There have been other Metroid stories that dealt with betrayal and duality. But this time, the stakes are higher. The blurry line between friend and enemy might be what gives Metroid Prime 4 its emotional weight.

These new facts could prompt people to completely rethink how Metroid works. Still, sources close to Retro Studios indicate that the core Metroid DNA remains intact.  Players won't be thrown into a sandbox world; instead, expect areas that are tightly connected but blocked off by upgrades, ziplines, and environmental dangers.

The scans also reveal that there are elements like bridges that can be broken, as well as climbing up and down, and exploring, which are linked to power-ups - a classic Metroid design philosophy.

This balance could be exactly what fans have been hoping for: a bold, next-gen expansion of Metroid's immersive worldbuilding that doesn't change the game's carefully tuned progression. People are speculating that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be released in 2025. This means that Metroid Prime 4 could be both a bridge and a showcase—an evolution made to push the limits of new hardware.

What these leaks don't show might be more interesting than what they do show. Metroid Prime 4 is a puzzle that needs to be put together due to the various translations, missing articles, and retracted footage. It's a game that has been in development for almost ten years, and now it doesn't want to reveal itself all at once.

Currently, the hints suggest a journey through frozen caverns, alien ruins, and challenging partnerships. A world where every light could be a beacon or a trap, and a story where Samus must choose whom to trust.

The Prime series may finally make a comeback after all these years—not just as a follow-up, but as an entirely new way to explore, discover, and feel fear in a Nintendo setting.

But every fan wants to know the same thing: when the Switch 2 portals open, will Metroid Prime 4 really live up to its legend, or will it always be lost in translation?
