Sony has quietly made one of the most requested changes to the PlayStation 5's user interface: the return of dynamic themes, or at least something like them. Sources say that a recent update to the PS5 system adds new wallpapers that can be changed in the Welcome Hub, which makes the home screen look more lively. These aren't the full-on interactive themes from the PS3 and PS4 days, but they do give fans a little taste of the customization they've been wanting for years.

The update adds two new live wallpapers from upcoming blockbuster games: Battlefield 6 and NBA 2K26. The feature lets users set dynamic backgrounds that make the console's main hub move and animate in small ways.

NBA 2K26, PS5 Finally Gets New Dynamic Themes, But Fans Want More

The theme for NBA 2K26 gives it a sporty, sleek look that basketball fans will love. The theme for Battlefield 6 is darker and more cinematic, with its operator lineup in bright orange and black colors that are perfect for Halloween. It looks great and is already winning over fans who miss the PS4 interface's personality.

It looks like Sony is trying to get more customizable and partner with other brands by bringing back dynamic backgrounds, even if it's just in this limited way. This update lets users show off their favorite games front and center instead of just using static backgrounds or store ads. The change seems like a nod to long-time fans who remember the golden age of PS3 and PS4 themes, when changing your background didn't just change the look of your console, it changed how it felt.

For those who don't know, it's been possible to make your own PS5 background for a while now. Through the PlayStation Store, users could already get high-resolution screenshots from any game and use them as static wallpapers.

But this update goes even further by adding depth, movement, and a touch of exclusivity. It's not a big deal, but it shows that Sony is finally ready to hear what the community wants.

Even though they are excited, a lot of fans can't help but feel a little nostalgic and angry. There were a lot of famous dynamic themes on the PS3 and PS4 that not only looked good, but also sounded good. Each theme was like a little party for the games people loved, with ambient soundscapes and custom icon animations.

There were even special promotional themes that were linked to in-game achievements. For example, Platinum trophies unlocked unique designs from developers like Square Enix. Gamers had more reasons to finish games than just bragging rights because of those rewards.

The PS5, on the other hand, came out with a sleek but sterile design that didn't have this personal touch. Even the PS Vita, with its peculiar bubble-based interface, allows for more customization. Sony appears to be returning to the spirit of individuality with these new live wallpapers, which is a positive step. Although this is a modest step, it suggests that the business may be prepared to unleash its creative side once more.

Battlefield 6, PS5 Finally Gets New Dynamic Themes, But Fans Want More

This is interesting because it happens at the same time that Sony is closing its official PlayStation Gear Store. Some fans were worried that personalized and community-driven products were being put on hold. But since the company is now focusing on licensed collaborations and digital branding opportunities, the addition of dynamic themes may be part of a larger plan to keep fans interested directly through their consoles.

In terms of technology, users of the new PS5 Pro model will also see slightly better versions of these wallpapers, which will have motion effects that are only available on the newer hardware. However, even these can be copied by hand by downloading the high-quality images and adding them to the console's share library. This shows once again that the most dedicated PlayStation fans will always find a way to make their experience unique.

This new update doesn't bring back the glory days of PS4's dynamic themes that changed music and icons, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Fans are hopeful that this is just the start of a bigger return to full console customization that mixes old-school and modern design ideas.

So, as players rush to put NBA 2K26 or Battlefield 6 wallpapers on their consoles, the question is whether Sony is just testing the waters or if this is the start of something bigger for PS5 personalization.
