Doom: The Dark Ages Guide | How To Beat The Cultists in Defend The City

In this guide, you’ll learn how to slay the cultists, destroy the Gore Portal, and complete the “Defend the City” mission in Doom: The Dark Ages. You’ll follow a series of puzzles and combat encounters that will test your wits and your skill with the shield throw.

Starting the Puzzle

You begin by entering a room on your left, where the first puzzle awaits. You need to run into this room, aim upward, and throw your shield into the target mechanism. Once your shield is lodged, you’ll notice that part of the puzzle is now active. From here, you can run back to the previous area, hold your shield throw button, and observe how the mechanism opens up a new path for you to progress.

Activating the Mechanism

To keep the gate open while activating the next component, you must circle the chamber. You’ll find a doorway leading to a new room at the back-right corner. Inside, there’s a lever that you must pull. Doing so sends you upward, where you can collect a life sigil before moving on. You’ll then step onto another platform, throw your shield at the next target, and destroy the second puzzle component.

Exploring the Secret Room

Behind the mechanism you just destroyed, you’ll see a breakable object. Jump onto the stacked boxes, go around, and smash through this object to reveal a secret room. Inside, you can grab some gold that’s tucked away next to the hidden entrance, giving you extra resources for the battles ahead.

Completing the Puzzle

With two components destroyed, you have one piece left to activate. Search the area until you find the last lever tucked away behind some rubble. Pulling this lever raises the final platform. Stand on it, aim your shield, and throw. You’ll hear the confirmation of the puzzle’s completion and see the final mechanism shatter.

Claiming Your Reward

After the puzzle is solved, you discover a new weapon: the Chain Shot. It packs a punch but comes with limited ammo. Nearby, you’ll also find more gold and additional supplies—make sure to gather everything before moving on.

Facing the Cultists

Cultists will show up to protect the Gore Portal once you have all of your gear. Quickly kill them with your Chain Shot and shield throw. Please focus on the members who are closest to the portal to stop them from turning it back on.

Final Notes

After slaying the last cultist, you’ll have successfully destroyed the Gore Portal and defended the city. You can now move on to the next challenge with your spoils in hand. Good luck, and may your shield always return.
