There's a building not far from the pantry that will solve that problem, and give you a tool you'll need for blacksmithing, if your drink stat is running low early in God Save Birmingham. This guide covers both.

God Save Birmingham Guide Collecting Ale

Finding the Ale Keg

Head into the building in question and close the door behind you for safety. You have an ale keg inside with approximately 6 units of liquid. Don't try to carry it with you, it will weigh you down and slow you down while exploring, drink it directly from it. Just a few sips here will suffice to replenish hydration for a while.

Climbing for Cloth Scraps and Rope

Inside, use the knife you should have with you to cut up any linen you see, and you'll get more linen scraps. To get an early rope, use the mount prompt in this building. There's a toolbox up top, but it's empty, and there's more clothing you can disassemble for cloth scraps and a spool if you want it, but you'll find plenty more of that later on. Remember, at this point of the game, you cannot save your game, but anything you leave behind remains where you dropped it in the world.

Grabbing the Smith's Hammer

There's also a chest here with some food in it, which will come in handy for pottage later. This same building has the Smith's Hammer in the back corner, so be sure to pick it up before you leave, as it's easy to miss.

Checking Your Condition

It's also a good idea to check your body condition while you're here. If you are injured, patch it up with linen wraps to build up discomfort over time and eventually become painful if not treated, so patch it up. Remember, if you have an injury on your leg, you will need to remove your boots before you can bandage it.
