The gaming world is getting easier to get into because there are now a lot of different pricing ranges for good hardware.  There are more and more ways to play PC games, and gadgets like the Steam Deck have made gaming portable and cheap.

It can be hard to choose between a high-end gaming laptop and a mobile gaming device because there are so many possibilities. To simplify the decision-making process, we will compare the Legion 9i gaming laptop and the Steam Deck OLED, highlighting size, portability, battery life, performance, utility, and price.

Size and Portability

Handheld gaming devices have a clear advantage in terms of portability. The Steam Deck is one of the most ergonomically accessible handhelds we've used. While slightly large, with the right case, it can fit in nearly any bag.

We've been using a Tomtoc hard case that keeps the device slim, solid, and easy to carry while allowing it to charge inside the case. Typically, all you need to game is the handheld itself and a USB-C charger.

For travel, handheld devices are particularly convenient, as they are lightweight and compact. Most of them are constructed of plastic, which doesn't add much weight. This is significant if you typically carry other gear, such a camera or tripod.  At first, we were worried about how big the Steam Deck was, but after trying other handhelds like the Legion Go and the ROG Ally, we found that the Steam Deck is the right size.

On the other hand, gaming laptops have come a long way in terms of being portable.  The Legion 9i weighs less than 6 pounds, which is impressive given its features. Some models can weigh almost 8 pounds.  The 16-inch screen is the perfect size for a gaming laptop because it gives you enough space without being too big.

That being said, gaming laptops are less portable than mobile devices because they often need extra equipment like a 330W charger, headphones, a mouse, or controllers.  You can pack a laptop in a bag, but the extra setup needed can make you not want to play games on the road.

Battery Life

Both handhelds and gaming laptops generally have average battery life, but handhelds often have the edge. The OLED Steam Deck lasts a couple of hours on 3D games and several hours on 2D games without charging. Its battery life is optimized for mobility, making it ideal for short gaming sessions without being tethered to a charger.

Gaming laptops, including the Legion 9i, have improved battery management with features like AI-based tuning, but gaming on battery still remains limited. Without the 330W charger, high-end games like Expeditions and Hell Divers 2 last only about 30 minutes on a flight tray, even though the laptop can perform well for light tasks for a few hours.

Overall, handhelds generally outperform laptops in battery life for gaming due to their design around total system power constraints.

Performance

When it comes to raw performance, gaming laptops dominate. Handhelds perform surprisingly well for games optimized for them, often achieving 45-60FPS on verified titles, but they are still limited by RAM, APU, and software constraints.

SteamOS and Valve's deck-verified program ensure consistency, which is why we prefer the Steam Deck over Windows handhelds for most games.

Gaming laptops offer far greater performance headroom. The Legion 9i, for example, with its RTX 4090, can run games like Star Citizen at nearly max settings at 2000p with 60FPS, while handhelds struggle to reach 15FPS on the same game.

Laptops also provide more versatile input options, including multiple USB-C, USB-A, display output, and Ethernet ports, making them ideal for games that require additional peripherals.

In summary, handhelds perform well for optimized titles but are limited in scope, whereas gaming laptops can handle virtually any game at high quality and offer broader input versatility.

Utility

Utility is an often-overlooked aspect of a gaming machine. If you need a single device for both work and play, a gaming laptop is the better option. While handhelds offer desktop modes and the ability to use dongles, keyboards, and mice, this setup is cumbersome for daily use.

A traditional laptop allows you to separate work and gaming seamlessly, which can be a significant advantage for productivity.

If you already have a laptop for work, a handheld can be a compact secondary device purely for gaming. This approach separates work from play and is often more convenient for travel or short gaming sessions.

Price

Handhelds obviously win when it comes to price. Most handhelds cost between $500 and $700, and the amount of storage space they have is what makes them more or less expensive. Gaming laptops, on the other hand, can cost anywhere from $700 to $5000 or more and come in a wide range of configurations.

A good gaming laptop often comes with additional requirements like AC power and sufficient cooling, which adds to the cost. For pure gaming on a budget, handhelds offer a better performance-to-dollar ratio and are simpler to purchase due to less variance in specs.

Final Thoughts

Both handhelds and gaming laptops are capable of delivering excellent gaming experiences, but they serve different needs. If you don't already own a capable computer and need an all-in-one solution, a gaming laptop is the right choice.

If you have a computer for work or school and want a portable, cost-effective gaming device, a handheld is ideal.

Handhelds are small, convenient to carry, and work well for optimized games. Gaming laptops, on the other hand, are more powerful, flexible, and useful, but they cost more. In the end, your choice comes down to whether you care more about mobility and ease of use or raw power and usefulness.
