Mewgenics Guide | How to Defeat The Coven

In this guide, you will learn how to beat The Coven, the Act 2 boss in the Core. The fight has two main parts, and your actions at the start decide how hard the second part will be.

The Candle Mechanic

At the start of the fight, you will see five candles placed around the board. These candles do not matter at first, but they become very important later. When the boss changes into its second form, called The Tormentor, each candle that is still lit gives it a buff.

The top two candles are the most dangerous. They give The Tormentor an extra turn and added abilities. The other candles increase damage, movement, trample, and other effects. You can hover over each candle to see what it does. Your goal is to put out these candles before the boss transforms. If you fail to do this, the second phase becomes much harder.

You should always put out the top two candles first. Removing the extra turn makes the fight much easier. After that, deal with the remaining candles.

To extinguish them, you can use the Water Hose, the mage spell Spit, or any ability that creates water tiles. You can also destroy the candles by attacking them, but it takes longer. Keep in mind that the boss will try to relight candles during this phase unless they are destroyed. If you only use water, you may need to put them out again.

The First Four Phases

Before The Tormentor appears, the fight goes through four phases. In each phase, a body rises from the boss. After all four bodies rise, the boss transforms.

The four phases are Pestilence, Famine, War, and Death. Do not waste time trying to damage the boss heavily during these phases. There is no real benefit to doing so. Focus on handling the candles and preparing for the second form.

There is one exception. If you completed the side quest from Dr. Beanies and obtained the Glowing Black Shard, you can use it to instantly kill this boss. However, this is a one-time use item.

Fighting The Tormentor

When The Tormentor appears, any candles still lit will now empower him. At this point, it is too late to extinguish them. This is why dealing with the candles early is important.

If you removed the top two candles, his movement would be limited. He will move two tiles and use a swipe attack. After that round, he switches to an attack called Feast. This is a full-board attack that can wipe out your team in one hit.

When he prepares Feast, stay completely out of its area. You can also use the mage’s freeze spell or any stun ability to stop him from acting. His attack pattern will repeat: move and swipe, then feast, then back again.

If you have a mage, you can control the fight more easily. Freeze or stun him so he misses turns, then attack safely during yours. If the candles were handled at the start, he would only have 120 health, and the fight would end quickly.

The key to winning this battle is simple. Deal with the candles first. Control his movement in the second phase. Avoid the feast attack. If you follow this plan, you will clear The Coven and move one step closer to Act 3.
