Incredible as it may be, the Nintendo Switch was first released in 2017 and still holds a firm place among gamers today. Nintendo does not quite match the current hardware owing to Sony and Microsoft, but at least the actual Switch features a lengthy life ahead of it yet before Nintendo announces an effective successor, which is frequently considered to be "Switch 2."
Lately, along with the new revolutionary technology for the next-gen consoles, the Switch 2 has been making headlines with a host of rumors surrounding its spec. Fortunately, DLSS technology has also been advancing rapidly, and industry insiders believe the new Switch 2 can have improved graphics capabilities, maybe offering upscaled 4K resolution and even VR. The rumors also mention backward compatibility, meaning gamers could play their existing Switch library on the new system – a feature that might be enough to convince people wary of getting scammed into buying yet another time the same title as the holiday season nears.
I am eager to see what lies in store behind the mysterious curtain of Nintendo's next move as we roll into the holiday season, where games and even remasters – are already plentiful. A new game has been revealed to be in the works by Mahiro Sakurai – the creator of Super Smash Bros. – which sold over 33 million copies. There's a lot of speculation that the new game could be the very next entry in the Super Smash Bros. franchise, and Nintendo is very keen on rolling out new titles for its major franchises to secure the success of its upcoming console.
The developers of My Time at Portia, Pathea Games, have revealed that "future Nintendo platforms" will receive their next game, My Time at Evershine. Also, Playtonic has hinted at a potential remaster of Yooka-Laylee in an unannounced Nintendo game.
Multiple sources have suggested remasters as well, with a 4K version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in development. With an already confirmed January release, Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of the multiple remastered titles that Nintendo seems to be working on in preparation for the Nintendo Switch 2. Speculation also surrounds the possibility of more upcoming remasters, possibly including Ubisoft classics.
The current Switch will still get new games like Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, but we're hopeful that at least a few of them may get a 4K upgrade. Not to mention that Bayonetta was rumored to be coming to the Switch 2 as well.
SEGA disclosed their five-game lineup at the 2023 Game Awards; we can expect new installments of Mario Kart and 3D series. Some reports also indicate that Square Enix is transferring more titles to Nintendo's upcoming console after the disappointing sales figures on the PS5, meaning that JRPGs like Final Fantasy could thrive on Nintendo Switch 2.
In addition, the anticipated lineup includes FromSoftware's ever-famous Elden Ring and Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds. The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to feature an enhanced cooling system and support for DLSS to provide better graphics and performance.
The new console's unveiling deadline is approaching, and given the number of upcoming events and the holiday sales period, it seems improbable that the Switch successor will be unveiled before the end of 2024. It wouldn't be fiscally wise for Nintendo to reveal the upcoming console after November 5th, as it could negatively impact current switch sales. It may make more sense to wait for a reveal in early 2025, ensuring they maximize sales this holiday for the current generation Switch.
With much interest geared toward the Switch, Nintendo might still hold onto the current version and potentially delay the Nintendo Switch 2 a tad bit more until they feel it's the right time to do so. Well, of course, it's Nintendo, and they know how to promote their consoles and games and generate sales out of nothing. So we're just eagerly waiting to get our hands on the Nintendo Switch 2.
