While Nintendo fans eagerly awaited an announcement about the Switch 2's release date last year, Nintendo still hasn't officially announced it. While further Nintendo Switch 2 updates are expected to be revealed by the company in 2025, Nintendo has acknowledged some kind of new hardware, confirming Switch 2 will be backward compatible with existing software, but despite the hardware leaks, there’s an update on the Switch 2 reveal date.
Since the new year began, more rumors about the Nintendo Switch 2 have surfaced, and this time, they surround a trademark that suggests the next system may have new internal components. Earlier in the week, images of the motherboard for the new system allegedly appeared online, although their authenticity is still up for debate. However, it has sparked a series of discussions about how powerful the new platform will be.
Although the patent was submitted in July 2023, it was only last week that it was published for the first time. This trademark outlines AI image upscaling technology that aims to keep video game download sizes modest enough to fit on a physical game cartridge while yet providing 4k graphics.
The picture seems to depict the inside structures of the Switch 2. There has been some good speculation about the next-gen game system based on prior picture leaks, and this does line up with that. There are some disputes over exactly what chip the manufacturer is using and what this means for real-world performance. Although it's expected the Switch 2 will use some version of Nvidia's DLSS technology to upscale images similar to the PS5's PSSR solution, the question remains: How close will the Switch 2 be to the PS4 Pro?
This is a particularly pertinent detail when it comes to third-party support because many major games are still releasing on Sony's last-gen console. So, some fans are hopeful that the Switch 2 will surpass the power output of the PS4 Pro in terms of performance, while others are skeptical that it will even be able to match the original PS4.
But we all know the big thing here, and the big takeaway is that the success of the Nintendo Switch was not contingent on its power. Despite how powerful the Switch is, it's because of the games and the form factor, and so it wouldn't be that surprising.
If the Switch 2 ends up being quite a bit less powerful than fans were expecting, Nintendo knows that's not its selling point. However, it is not clear why Switch users were a little bit frustrated with the lack of strong third-party support or, you know, just third-party support not being nearly as strong as it potentially could have been.
It is understandable why they would be a bit disappointed if the Switch 2 could not even match the PS4 Pro. The Switch 2 reveal is right around the corner so that we will find out very soon. Nintendo has said that Switch 2, which has yet to be released, will be compatible with the first Switch games and will also have Nintendo Switch Online. In addition, Nintendo has already promised to unveil the Switch 2 in March of 2025, so the event is quickly coming. On the other hand, the system is unlikely to debut in the current fiscal year of Nintendo; instead, it will likely debut in April 2025 or later.
