Warner Bros. Cancelled Hogwarts Legacy Story DLC
Warner Bros. was concerned that players would not receive value for money for the price of DLC content.

Warner Bros. Games hasn't had the best of times for a while now, particularly after releasing their high-budget Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League title. And last month, they canceled the Wonder Woman game and shut down Monolith Productions, the studio behind the game. So things must have been really desperate for them.
So, when the news of Warner Bros. canceling a previously planned DLC for Hogwarts Legacy came out, it scared the fans of this game. The DLC was to be released to coincide with the game's speculated Definitive Edition, which would combine all the content worked on for Hogwarts Legacy.
Bloomberg had previously reported that the release of the DLC was cut because of budget concerns, as Warner Bros. executives were concerned that players would not receive value for money for the price of DLC content. The DLC was being developed at Rocksteady Studios in partnership with Avalanche Software, the same studio that had been working on Hogwarts Legacy.
It's only the most recent in a string of cancellations from Warner Bros., though, as a reportedly canceled Wonder Woman game was taken off the table as studios closed and restructured throughout February 2025.
Though details have remained somewhat in the dark, the DLC reportedly involved a new story regarding companions that was removed from the original Hogwarts Legacy title due to time, storytelling, or mechanical limitations. The companions in Hogwarts Legacy included a group of Hogwarts students and staff, each with their own side quests as players progressed through the story.
Hogwarts Legacy was boycotted by some fans who were unhappy with comments made by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling against the LGBTQ+ communities, particularly transgender individuals. The franchise has also been under long-term criticism for purportedly spreading anti-semitic stereotypes and for problematic storytelling surrounding the enslavement of in-world house elves.
This aside, Hogwarts Legacy was a commercial success, selling more than 30 million copies globally to become the best-selling game of 2023. It was nominated for Game of the Year and Best Game on Steam Deck, which it won at the Steam Awards, while players saw the fact that the game did not receive any Game of the Year nominations from Steam as a snub.
Hogwarts Legacy fans will just have to wait for word on what Warner Bros. Games plans for the franchise. While the rumored DLC is lost, fans may be able to see its material repurposed for Harry Potter games down the road. Warner Bros. has already stated it will focus on its bigger franchises, including Harry Potter, Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, and Mortal Kombat, rather than producing material for lesser games and riskier franchises.
In 2024, the studio announced that it would be among its major initiatives in the future to develop a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy. Cancelling DLC might suggest that the studio is working on a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, but not much information on its plot, characters, and timeline is being revealed. Harry Potter's fame is not fading anytime soon, and it won't be long before gamers will have the opportunity to go back to Hogwarts.
