If you stick only to Yakuza 0 Director's Cut's main story missions, you will miss out on a lot of excellent rewards. The game makes it easy to follow the plot by marking objectives on your map and placing reminders in your pause menu.
However, rushing from point A to point B just to finish the game ruins a huge part of the experience. You can easily bypass helpful items that would make your fights in later chapters much easier.
Instead, take your time walking through Kamurochō and Sōtenbori. Explore the streets at your own pace, check out the scenery, and find where the different minigames and side activities are located.
Completing substories along the way rewards you with extra cash, unique weapons, and protective gear. You will also earn Completion Points to fund your upgrades in Yakuza 0 Director's Cut.
In fact, if you take the time to look around Sōtenbori and gather information before diving into Chapter 3, you can walk away with much bigger rewards from the Odyssey mission. It always pays off to step away from the main plot and see what the towns have to offer.

Managing Heat in Combat
Combat rewards you with Heat, but standing still for too long or taking damage causes your meter to drain. Once you build up enough power, you can expend it to unleash devastating attacks known as Heat Moves.
If you want to make sure you do not trigger these cinematic attacks by accident, you can hold down ZL to hide the button prompt.
Every punch and kick you land builds up your meter. As it fills, your character attacks much faster, hits harder, and gains the ability to use powerful Heat Moves that can flatten entire groups of street thugs or chunk down a boss's health bar.
The main catch is that you must stay aggressive. If you stop attacking or get hit, your meter drops quickly. This depletion happens at a much faster rate in this specific entry than in previous games in the series.
The system uses a three-tier meter. Keeping more bars filled makes Kiryu and Majima far more dangerous in a fight. However, certain abilities and skills are locked behind specific tiers, making your meter difficult to keep topped off in Yakuza 0 Director's Cut.
For example, Kiryu cannot activate his Charging Bear Hug unless you have all three tiers completely full. You need to stay on the move and constantly land your strikes to keep these combat advantages active.

Keeping Inventories Stocked
To keep from dying during long, exhausting street battles or tough boss encounters, you need to load up the inventories of both Kiryu and Majima with healing items.
Energy drinks like Tauriner and Tatsu Brand drinks are incredibly useful because they grant an immediate burst of Heat during a tough fight.
Your best bet is to spend your money on larger, premium items like Toughness Emperor, Tauriner ++, and Staminan Royals, since they restore much more health and energy.
Under normal circumstances, you will not have a hard time finding recovery items unless you accidentally run into Mr. Shakedown.
Even so, it is smart to stay prepared. Main story missions can transition into surprise boss fights or long gauntlets where having a full inventory means the difference between life and death.
Fortunately, Kiryu and Majima will usually drop a verbal hint right before you enter a particularly dangerous area. When buying supplies, focus heavily on the energy drinks. Toughness fixes your health, Tauriner refills your Heat, and Staminans restore both meters at the same time.
While store-bought food like Bento boxes and Sushi Sets heal a good amount of health, smaller snacks like Sandwiches and Onigiri are a waste of money because they do not give you enough recovery for what they cost in Yakuza 0 Director's Cut.

Investing Cash into Skill Trees
This game throws away traditional experience points and uses cold, hard cash to fund your upgrades. This system forces you to balance your funds between purchasing gear, buying weapons, betting on underground catfights, and unlocking new nodes for your fighting styles.
On top of standard boosts to your health, defense, and power, these purchases unlock entirely new combat maneuvers to help you take down anyone who challenges you.
Your abilities are laid out on a skill tree, which means you will occasionally have to buy a weak node just to clear the path toward a better one.
For instance, Kiryu has to pay for a slow attack called Charged Knee Strike before he can get his hands on the highly effective Counter Hook in his Brawler style. On the other hand, you can completely ignore entire branches of the tree. Do not bother unlocking Majima’s weapon-stealing moves in his Thug style; they sound great on paper but are far too situational to be practical.
You are much better off focusing on his Evasion Strike and Extra Bat Nunchaku Swing upgrades to catch enemies off guard and keep them at a distance.

Mastering Business Minigames
Completing regional substories allows you to recruit helpful security staff for Kiryu’s real estate venture and top-tier hostesses for Majima’s cabaret club in Yakuza 0 Director's Cut.
You do not need to master every single activity like slot car racing, karaoke, mahjong, or the Telephone Club unless you are going for 100% completion or need quick Completion Points from the local shrines.
However, you absolutely must learn how to run Real Estate Royale and Cabaret Club Czar, as these are the main side businesses for both characters.
In Real Estate Royale, Kiryu buys up commercial properties across Kamurochō to overthrow the Five Billionaires.
These tycoons will eventually challenge Kiryu to specific minigames, so it helps to practice those activities ahead of time so you do not get caught off guard. In Cabaret Club Czar, Majima manages a club and assigns the right hostesses to matching customers to maximize his nightly earnings.
He can also run special training sessions with his S-Rank hostesses to boost their levels, but you need to select the correct dialogue answers during their conversations to get the best results.
Finishing these two massive business storylines completely unlocks the hidden, locked portions of your standard skill trees. Even better, it rewards you with a hidden fourth combat stance called the Legend style.
This secret style allows you to pump money into your health, defense, and attack stats to reach completely broken levels of power, assuming you can afford the massive cash requirements in Yakuza 0 Director's Cut.
