God of War is Expanding into Something Bigger than Olympus Ever Was

A decade-long plan, a live-action epic, and a return to Kratos’ bloodline could redefine PlayStation’s crown jewel.

There are new changes happening in the world of God of War. Below the mythical surface, Sony's most famous series is slowly growing into something much bigger than a single story. Several projects, some confirmed, others suspected, or ones that have been buried for a long time, are shaping what could be the most ambitious time in the series' history. The next ten years of God of War look big, planned, and full of both danger and promise, with new mythologies and live-action TV shows.

God of War 6, the next mainline game, is at the center of this world. It is already being worked on at Santa Monica Studio. It was said that production started soon after Ragnarök and its Valhalla expansion were finished. Job postings at the studio mention familiarity with the series, which pretty much proves that there will be a sequel.

It is said that Cory Barlog will be back to direct. Barlog was the visionary who reimagined Kratos for a new age in 2018. It has been said again that Barlog's current work is not related to a new IP but to an old series that specialists say will change again.

Sources that people trust say that God of War 6 will take Kratos to the world of Egyptian myths. Reports say the main character's new weapon, an Egyptian khopesh that is curved, will be different from the Norse weapons and start a new style of fighting. Christopher Judge, who played Kratos, even suggested that this kind of place would "complete the circle" of his journey. If what they say is true, Egypt's gods, sands, and symbols will shape the next big change in the series.

After a six-year break between God of War (2018) and Ragnarök, experts say God of War 6 won't come out until 2028, which might be around the same time as the PlayStation 6 launch.

Timelines, on the other hand, move more slowly. The game is still planned to come out on both PS5 and PS6, but development resources are being split up because Santa Monica Studio is in charge of several other projects. The most important of these is a smaller, Greek-era spin-off that aims to connect the show to its mythical roots.

The rumored name for this spin-off is God of War: Deimos, and it will be a 2.5D Metroidvania-style action game. It brings Kratos' long-lost brother back to life and lets players see Sparta before the events that made it famous in The Ghost of Sparta.

Reports from insiders say it's more like Metroid Dread or Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, with fast-paced combat and development based on exploration. Originally set to come out in 2025, the project has allegedly been pushed back to 2026 so that the gameplay can be improved and the release date doesn't conflict with any of Santa Monica's bigger games.

Some attempts have not made it. A different God of War project that Bluepoint Games was working on was quietly shelved. It was supposed to be a live-service multiplayer game set in ancient Greece, but Sony shelved it after testing showed that it didn't fit with the company's overall plan.

Screenshots released by MP1st showed settings that were based on Hades' domain, which suggests that the game would have been a bridge between Ascension and God of War II. Bluepoint has since moved on to a new third-person action game that hasn't been released yet, but some of the assets from the project that was canceled may still be used in something else.

When the franchise turned twenty years old earlier this year, fans who were looking for a remastered collection of the original trilogy were met with silence. Sony celebrated with digital avatars, merchandising, and a retrospective gallery instead of the full remaster reveal that was expected. But the huge number of requests for remasters has been noticed, and sources say that third-party companies may be asked to bring the old games to new hardware in the future.

God of War is getting ready to take over another platform besides games. The live-action version on Amazon Prime is slowly coming together. Filming is set to start in Vancouver in March 2026. The show will adapt the 2018 story, which is about Kratos' time in Norse mythology. Jason Momoa, Dave Bautista, and Henry Cavill are said to be in talks to play the role, but many fans still want Christopher Judge to play the part again. Amazon calls it one of its biggest projects to date, so God of War could soon be enjoyed by people who don't play video games.

If everything goes as planned, the franchise's future will look like this: the Deimos spin-off and Amazon series will start filming in 2026, the show will air for the first time in 2027, and God of War 6 will come out in full in 2028. Many people couldn't have thought how Kratos' world would grow when he first picked up his swords almost twenty years ago. It's growing in mythologies, mediums, and ways to play. It's not just about getting revenge in the next age of God of War. It's also about leaving a legacy, starting over, and the endless march of creation itself.
