God of War 6 and the Future of Kratos: What We Know So Far

From Egyptian swords to 2.5D adventures, the next chapter of the God of War universe might be bigger than we thought.

The God of War franchise is about to get even more ambitious than anyone expected. Rumors have been swirling about a full-scale God of War 6 that's set in an entirely new mythology, and fans can't stop speculating about what it could mean for Kratos and also Atreus.

According to leaks, this next game may introduce a brand-new signature weapon for the God of War series (a giant curved Egyptian sword) and possibly take Kratos into a fresh mythological setting. On top of that, there's talk of a smaller 2.5D spin-off game set during Kratos's younger years in Greece, giving players a chance to relive some of the franchise's classic vibes.

Development for God of War 6 has likely been underway for several years, starting around the release of God of War Ragnarök and its Valhalla DLC. Some reports even suggest that planning began before Ragnarok's launch, hinting that Santa Monica Studios has been at the drawing board for a long, long while.

Like the 2018 soft reboot, God of War 6 is expected to transport Kratos into a new mythological world, potentially with entirely fresh combat mechanics and gameplay. While the studio hasn't officially confirmed the setting, several insiders, including well-known leaker Tom Henderson, point to Egyptian mythology as the next frontier for Kratos.

Cory Barlog, who directed God of War 2018, is reportedly the main director for the next installment.

While he may have contributed to Ragnarok, that project was primarily led by Eric Williams. This next game, however, is said to be Barlog's vision from start to finish. Interestingly, earlier rumors suggested he might be working on a sci-fi game or a new IP, but recent reports clarify that the project isn't sci-fi and isn't considered a brand-new IP either. This strongly suggests that Barlog is continuing work in the God of War universe, either on God of War 6 or another related project, which could even feature Atreus as the main character.

Fans are also buzzing about the new signature weapon. If reports are accurate, Kratos will wield a massive curved Egyptian sword, signaling a departure from the Blades of Chaos and Leviathan Axe. While it's unclear whether these previous weapons will return, many fans, including myself, would love the chance to switch between all three.

There's always a possibility that the Egyptian sword is a clever misdirection, though. It's possible that Kratos could traverse multiple mythologies, perhaps visiting Egypt, returning to Greece, or even confronting Norse gods once more. But if the reports hold true—which you can't ever guarantee—the Egyptian sword strongly suggests that Egypt will be the primary setting for God of War

Gameplay details are still largely under wraps, but there's reason to be excited. Santa Monica Studios will likely want to shake things up with this reboot, yet the 2018 formula has become Sony's bread and butter.

The Norse-era games were already different from the original God of War trilogy, but God of War 6 may not change that experience too much. You may anticipate a new way to take on enemies, a new way to level up, and maybe even a shift toward an open-world concept. Kratos may be exploring massive structures and fighting gigantic monsters in the middle of the map.

The core presentation (the unbroken single-take cutscenes and immersive gameplay) will likely remain consistent with what we have seen from the PS4 era. Also, a smaller 2.5D God of War spin-off is reportedly in development. Set during Kratos's Greek-era adventures, this game is said to feature a Metroidvania-style layout with a hack-and-slash combat system closer to the original trilogy.

The scale has been compared to games like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown or Metroid Dread, and insiders have confirmed the spin-off's existence.  While the exact details are still murky, the fact that the game's real is enough to give you crumbs to keep you coming back for more. Smaller-scale projects like this make sense, especially given the massive budgets for modern AAA titles.

The 2.5D spin-off could serve as a perfect bridge while fans wait for God of War 6. With the God of War TV series coming to Amazon Prime in the next couple of years, Sony might want a smaller game to coincide with the show's release and keep the franchise relevant.

Speaking of full-scale releases, the timing and platform for God of War 6 are still big questions. Given the extended development cycle, it's starting to look like the game might not release on PS5 but could instead launch on the PS6, rumored for 2027 or 2028. Whether this will happen depends heavily on Barlog's current project.

If he is indeed working on God of War 6, it could be the next major release, but if it's a different game, fans might have a longer wait. While full-scale development may not kick off until 2026 at the earliest.

In short, the God of War franchise is poised for an exciting evolution. With God of War 6 likely bringing Kratos into a new mythological setting and a 2.5D Greek-era spin-off keeping the fandom alive in between, there's a lot to look forward to. Sony is clearly committed to expanding the God of War universe in both big and small ways.

As always, take leaks and rumors with a grain of salt, but the pieces we've seen so far paint a picture of a franchise that's evolving while honoring its roots. From the Blades of Chaos to the Leviathan Axe, and now possibly an Egyptian sword, Kratos's journey is just getting bigger and bigger (like his beard).

Don't get anxious. There's something coming for everyone. The release of the 2.5D spin-off for you Metroidvania lovers, the upcoming God of War TV series for the TV fanatics, and the eventual launch of God of War 6, which we are all waiting with bated breath for.
