In Anno 117: Pax Romana, your economy is built around managing Denarii across your islands. You will incur costs while constructing buildings and expanding settlements, so maintaining control over income and expenses is necessary.
By monitoring your finances, supporting residents, and growing incrementally, you can make the economy viable.

Understanding Denarii and Balance
At the top of the screen, you can see two coin icons. The left icon shows your current Denarii, and the second icon shows your Balance. Your Denarii will change as you build, trade, and pay upkeep, and it may sometimes drop below zero.
This can happen during expansion. What matters is keeping your Balance above zero. A positive Balance means your Denarii will increase over time if no significant expenses occur in Anno 117: Pax Romana.
Managing Debt Early On
Debt arises when your expenses exceed your income. This can slow progress when you need to build more structures. Early in the game, you should focus on housing to bring in more residents and amenities to meet their needs. Taxes and basic production income from residents are your primary revenue streams at this stage.
If your Balance becomes negative, you use production buildings with high upkeep costs. This lowers expenses and allows income to recover.

Expanding Production and Trade Income
Once residents are meeting their needs and income is steady, you can add more production buildings. These buildings require upkeep, but they allow you to produce goods that can later generate income through trading.
When placing buildings, pay attention to Attributes. Buildings that provide Money or Population bonuses should be placed near residential areas. This increases income from nearby homes and raises the number of residents contributing to the economy.
Housing, Needs, and Resident Income
The number of residents on an island directly affects how much money you earn. When unsure what to build next, adding more housing is often a helpful option. Each resident group has specific Needs that production buildings must meet. These buildings apply positive or negative Attributes to nearby areas.
Meeting residents ensures they continue working and paying taxes. Ignoring these Needs can reduce income and workforce availability in Anno 117: Pax Romana.

Research and Economic Effects
As your island develops, you can invest in Research that affects income and upkeep. Some Research nodes provide income-related area effects or reduce costs.
The Fish Markets Economic Research increases the Income Area Effect of Fishing Huts and Cockle Pickers. The Portitores Civic Research reduces workforce requirements and upkeep costs for all Warehouses. The Large Loan Civic Research allows you to take a large loan from a rival.
Other Research options increase the effects of buildings, such as the Market, which raises income and population within its area of effect in Anno 117: Pax Romana.
Patron Gods and Upkeep Control
You can select a patron god for each island to influence production or costs. Neptune reduces Ship Upkeep by up to 50 percent. Mars reduces upkeep for Troops recruited on that island. Choosing a patron god can help manage ongoing expenses.

Trading, Gifts, and Bailouts
As your island network grows, rivals may offer monetary gifts that you can accept or decline. Trading surplus goods also becomes a source of income.
If your finances fail, you may be offered a bailout. The number of bailouts depends on your difficulty settings. If money management becomes an issue, you can change settings in the Game Setup menu.
Allow Bailouts to Always allows you to receive financial assistance when your balance falls below a certain level. Once your business is stable, you can change this setting again in Anno 117: Pax Romana.
