Happiness plays a direct role in how your island functions in Anno 117: Pax Romana. If you ignore resident Happiness, unrest can grow, leading to revolts, property damage, and work stoppages.

These events reduce your workforce and require you to allocate resources to repairs, which can disrupt production and expansion.

Effects of Low Happiness

When resident happiness declines, unrest increases. If this continues, residents may rebel, destroy buildings, and refuse to work.

This creates a cycle in which a lack of workers to gather resources makes it harder to build new housing to replace the lost population. Early management of happiness helps prevent this situation.

Meeting Resident Needs

The primary way you influence Happiness is by meeting residents' needs. When basic Needs are fulfilled, residents work without issue in Anno 117: Pax Romana.

You can check a residence to see its current Needs and satisfaction level. Different resident tiers require different goods, and as residents are upgraded, their Needs become more complex.

Most residents share everyday Needs categories across tiers. These categories include Food, Public Service, Fashion, Household, and Marvels.

You can meet these Needs through local production or trade. When all Needs are fulfilled, and satisfaction is high, you can upgrade residents to the next tier.

Upgrading Residents and Workforce Impact

Upgrading homes increases the island's Attributes, but the group that was working has now been removed from the workforce. Either upgrade the people living in lower-tier areas or build more houses to address this problem. Ignoring workforce changes during upgrades can affect pay and production lines.

City Layout and Happiness Control

How the city is laid out affects people's Happiness. It's easy to forget the people who live nearby when you think about expansion. These mistakes can cause ongoing unrest, which will make people less happy over time.

Residential zones should be built around Public Service buildings that increase Happiness. Structures such as the Bardic Hearth and the Theater provide Happiness bonuses within their area of effect. Safety also affects Happiness, so placing Custodes and Watchtowers throughout residential areas helps maintain order.

Separating Residential and Industrial Areas

Industrial and residential zones should not be located in proximity to one another to avoid adverse effects on residents. Many production buildings use harmful Area Effects that make people less happy within a specific range. Before you put down a building, you should check its Attribute effects on nearby buildings.

Buildings that produce goods like Lard at a Renderer apply adverse Area Effects to Happiness and Fire Safety.

These effects lower the overall Happiness rating. Moving these buildings away from housing immediately improves affected residences in Anno 117: Pax Romana.

Health and Happiness Connection

Buildings that negatively affect Health also reduce Happiness. Production sites such as Pig Farms and Charcoal Burners lower Health in nearby areas, which in turn lowers resident Happiness.

Keeping these buildings away from homes helps maintain both Health and Happiness across the island in Anno 117: Pax Romana.
