The weapons in Final Fantasy XVI are divided into tiers of potency and rarity. Early-game weapons are easily gathered and upgraded, mid-tier weapons require more exploration and side missions, while the most powerful ones-ultimate or legendary-are forged from rare ingredients that one can get at the very end of the game or post-game. Each weapon has different perks, so it's important to decide which fits your playstyle.
Early Game Weapons
Flametongue
One of the earliest possible powerful weapons in possession of Clive is called Flamebrand. It's available after passing the quest named "The Price of Blood". It gives some amount to both attack and defense and works pretty well, but it suits most at the earlier stage of in-game progress.
To get this Flamebrand, finish the main plot line, be done with the task in Rosaria, complete all dungeons that happened to be side quests around it, and have this as the end of everything reward.
Steel Sabre
The Steel Sabre is a reliable weapon that can be crafted by sending word to Blackthorne, the blacksmith in the Hideaway. The recipe is granted by completing the questline "Forging the Future." Ingredients include Iron Ore, which can be found in the Lostwing, and basic crafting components bought from Charon's Toll.
Mid-Tier Weapons
Obsidian blade
Obsidian Blade significantly increases Clive's attack power and is obtainable during most of the middle portion of the game. Acquiring it involves defeating a target on the Hunt Board titled "The Midnight Reaver", a dangerous foe hiding in the Dalimil Inn region. Defeating the above foe rewards you with a crafting blueprint along with hard-to-come-by items, like Obsidian Shards. If the blueprint becomes available, proceed with crafting in Blackthorne.
Mythril Sword
Mythril Sword: This is a good mid-tier weapon that balances between attack and speed. This weapon can be purchased from vendors in the capital city of Oriflamme after doing some region-specific side quests. It can also be discovered inside a treasure chest in the Velkroy Desert. You'll need to prepare yourself for a mini-boss protecting it.
High-Tier Weapons
Ragnarok
Ragnarok is one of the most popular weapons in the game, having a huge attack bonus and critical hit damage. To get Ragnarok, complete the quest "The Legacy of the Blade," which pops up during the final parts of the main storyline.
This involves searching for ancient relics around Valisthea, solving puzzles, and defeating elite enemies. The final part of the sword is crafted from rare materials like Adamantite and Celestial Ore, which can be acquired by completing high-level hunts and opening certain dungeon chests.
Excalibur
Excalibur is a mythical weapon known for its high damage and for empowering Clive's Eikon abilities. To craft Excalibur, complete the "Knight's Honour" side quest, which is unlocked after completing the mid-game story in the Sanbreque region.
The quest entails saving a hostage knight and obtaining an ancient artifact. In the crafting of Excalibur, one requires Mythril Ingots, Dragon Horn, and a very rare artifact known as Hero's Sigil, which can only be acquired from a hidden monster within the Hall of Valour dungeon.
Ultimate Weapons
Gotterdammerung
Gotterdammerung is regarded to be the ultimate weapon within Final Fantasy XVI, owing to its incomparable attack strength and special effects that amplify Clive's abilities. To craft Gotterdammerung, you need to complete a number of endgame hunts, which will require you to defeat the S-Rank mark "Behemoth King" and the A-Rank mark "Iron Giant".
These give a number of rare commodities - among them are the Behemoth Shards and Ultimatum Ore. Return to Blackthorne with this information, and he will attempt to create this behemoth - a process costing an inordinate amount of Gil so long as your stockpile.
Ultima Weapon
The Ultima Weapon is the best of the best when it comes to raw power and versatility in Final Fantasy XVI. This weapon is unlocked after completing the post-game mission "Eternal Flame," which requires visiting key places, defeating secret enemies, and solving a series of intricate puzzles.
You will need Ultima Core, Celestial Crystal, and Eternal Ember, which can be found in the secret dungeon "The Abyss of Time." Now, with these ingredients in your hands, go back to Blackthorne and craft the Ultima Weapon.
Tips for Buying the Best Weapons
Exploration plays a huge part in finding the best weaponry available in Final Fantasy XVI. Scour every dungeon for rare resources, complete side quests, and defeat all Hunt Board markers. Pay attention to Blackthorne's inventory for new recipes that may become available after certain story beats. Additionally, stash rare craft components and focus on crafting weapon upgrades at the forge in the Hideaway.
