Getting a camel is the best way to travel through the desert. These mounts are dependable and have a substantial carrying capacity. Getting one involves capturing a young camel and then raising it. There are two primary methods for this: trapping one in its natural habitat or locating one in a camp.

Preparing to Trap

To catch a baby camel, you'll need a Medium Trap. You can unlock this in your technology tree and build it at a Building Workshop. It takes Hardwood, Plank, Thatch, and Thick Rope to craft. It is a good idea to bring three traps just in case things go wrong.

You also need bait. Camels love Figs. You can find Figs or Fig Seeds at big barbarian camps with farms, like the one in Moon Bay. If you do not see any growing in the plots, check the storage boxes around the farm to find them.

Finding Camel Locations

Camels live deep in the desert areas of the map. One reliable spot is near the oasis in the Wind Eroded Dunes.

You can also find them around the oasis in the Rockhenge Desert. Another great place is just below the Sunken City near some Ancient Ruins in Soulmask.

This spot is very handy because it sits right next to a portal, making it easy to check quickly. You can often see camels wandering right outside the ruins or along the path leading into that biome.

The Taming Process

When you find a family of camels, you must deal with the parents first. If an adult camel walks into your trap, it will break. Use a Bow, Bronze Whip, or Dual Daggers to drive the parents away or defeat them.

Once the baby is alone, crawl toward it so you do not spook it. Place your Medium Trap and put at least one Fig inside. Back away and wait. The baby camel will eventually walk into the cage. When the door shuts, select the option to capture it. You now have a tamed baby camel.

Finding a Baby in a Camp

If you feel lucky, you can try to find a baby camel in a barbarian camp. In Moon Bay, there are animal pens near the docks that sometimes hold camels, Flamingos, or Boar. If a baby is in the pen, you can just walk up and claim it immediately. If you only see adults, you can clear them out and come back later to see if a baby has spawned. This method is easier but relies on luck.

Raising and Using Your Camel

Once you get your baby home, you must keep it fed and hydrated so it survives. Place it near a food and water trough or put Figs and a Water Bottle directly into its inventory. It takes some time for the camel to grow up in Soulmask.

When it is full-grown, you can craft a Camel Saddle at an Armor Forging Table using Thin Rope, Gauze, Leather Rope, and Leather. You can also equip your camel with a Wicker Basket to carry extra items on your journeys.
