Alone in the Dark Guide | Boiler Plate Puzzle

In Chapter 2 of Alone in the Dark, you'll encounter the Boiler Plate Puzzle. This is an important puzzle you'll need to solve to continue playing the game. This guide will show you how to solve it.

Getting Rid of Steam Obstruction

When you visit the Boiler Room, you can see a deadly steam leak blocking any further access. In order to remove it:

Enter the Drawing Room: Use the palette knife to release the jammed door to the Drawing Room. Retrieve the Cellar Key inside.

Enter the Food & Wine Cellar: Use the Cellar Key to unlock it. There, you will see an electrified wire submerged in water.

Turn Off the Electrical Hazard: Look for a switch on the right-hand side of the wine racks. Plug this switch into the nearby circuit breaker to turn off the power, making the area safe.

Obtain the Valve Handle: Turn off the power and proceed to the back of the cellar to obtain the Valve Handle.

Shut Down the Steam: Return to the Boiler Room and connect the Valve Handle to the boiler, closing off the steam supply.

Collect the Broken Plates

You must collect two broken plates in order to repair the boiler puzzle.

First Plate: After the steam has been closed, proceed to the newly accessible region in the Boiler Room and retrieve the first broken plate from the ground.

Second Plate

Obtain the Piano Key: In the Grand Parlor, obtain a key from the top of the broken piano.

Unlock Lottie's medicine Box: Use the key to unlock the medicine box in Lottie's Room and obtain Dr. Jenkin's Lozenges.

Go to Cassandra's Room: You will discover two more bottles of medicine.

Position the Medicine Bottles: Position all three bottles on Cassandra's Room rack, as viewed below, to show the numbers 2, 5, and 7.

To access the second broken plate, apply the cipher in Perosi's Room and position the lock in Pisces, Gemini, and Leo.

Solving the Boiler Plate Puzzle

Have both plates at your disposal:

• Stack the plates:  Return to the boiler and stack the plates.  Restack them to create a picture like the one below:
• Turn on the Boiler: Properly aligning the plates will return the boiler to normal, displaying the numbers 9, 7, and 5 on the gauges.
• Enter the code: Put your talisman on the plate and type in the digits 9, 7, and 5.  This opens a doorway that leads to a cemetery.
