Alone in the Dark Guide | Sunken Temple Puzzle

In Alone in the Dark Chapter 3, the Temple Puzzle in the Sunken Temple is a crucial puzzle that requires activating the light systems to open new locations and finally restore the Dark Man's contract. This guide will show you how to get into the Sunken Temple.

Accessing the Sunken Temple

Find the Rope: After completing the coffin challenge in Chapter 3, go to the desert and travel through a hole in the ground until you reach the temple.  There is a rope beside a campfire, between chests.

Enter the temple: Return to the hole, tie the rope on the stone pillar, and fall down into the Sunken Temple.

Early exploration

Main Hall: When you go in, look for a gargantuan Dark Man statue.  Locate black cat boxes and a Canopic Jar Lagniappe on the floor in front of the statue.

Open the Right Door: Pull the lever on the left of the statue to unlock the right door.  Prepare for a pair of enormous scarab-like animals to appear.

Obtaining the Lenses

The temple's secret is three light-guiding lenses.

Lens #1

Through the newly opened door downstairs, break through the obstacle to find a room with a pedestal and a chest. Open the chest to acquire the lens.  Place it on the pedestal and pull the lever near the opening.  To open the door, throw the light beam to the blue crystal above the door.

Lens #2

Return to the entrance hall and ascend the stairs on the left of the Dark Man statue. Place the lens on the small statue and point the light beam at the blue gem above the right-hand door on the statue to open it. 

Lens #3

Go down to the main hall and through the door you have just opened.  Keep going down the stairs to a room containing a small statue and a huge eye. Activate the statue by aiming the light beam at the eye, which will open a nearby chest containing the third lens.

Solve the Light Beam Puzzle

Lens Placement

• Set the three lenses on their respective little sculptures in a ring about the middle of the Dark Man statue.
• Left Statue: Align the beam on the small gem on the left of the statue.
• Center Statue: Align the beam on the huge gem on the statue's crown.
• Right Statue: Align the beam on the little diamond on the right of the statue.

Final Steps

After positioning the beams, ascend to the Dark Man statue's head and direct the light beam downward to the blue gem on the floor. Retrieve the contract, descend, and interact with the glowing place on the floor to receive the Dark Man's contract, which will complete the puzzle and advance the story.
