In Chapter 4 of Alone in the Dark, you will encounter a locked safe puzzle. The method to unlock it varies depending on who you choose, Edward Carnby or Emily Hartwood. This guide will show you how to solve the puzzle for both characters.
For Emily Hartwood
In the Empty Room, take down the wallpaper to the left of the safe to reveal messages such as "When I get back, 1XXX".
Determine the Safe Code
Open your inventory and examine the "A Long Engagement" ring.
The ring includes the inscription "1918" which completes the wall's hint.
Open the Safe
- Approach the safe and enter the combination by rotating the dial.
- Turn left to 9. Then turn right to 1.
- Turn left at 8.
When you open it, you'll find a Flash Bulb for the War Photo puzzle in Ruth's chamber.
For Edward Carnby
- In the Empty Room, find the wallpaper to the left of the safe.
- Interact with it to disassemble it, revealing handwritten messages such as the incomplete sequence "#196XXX-LA".
Determine the Safe Code
- Open your inventory and check Edward Carnby's Private Investigator license.
- Note the license number "#196692-LA" where "692" replaces the missing digits from the wall hint.
Open the Safe
- Approach the safe and enter the combination by rotating the dial.
- Turn left to 6, then right to 9.
- Turn left at 2.
The safe will open, exposing a note from MacCarfey and a Picayune coin required for the subsequent challenges.
