Alone in the Dark Guide | How To Unlock All 5 Endings

In Alone in the Dark, you may reach one of five potential endings. Among them, you'll find two regular endings—one for Emily and one for Edward—as well as three hidden endings that may be unlocked by finishing certain sets of Lagniappes. These endings are determined by the protagonist picked and certain acts done throughout the playthrough.

To get all the endings in the game, you must go through both Edward Carnby's and Emily Hartwood's narratives, fulfilling unique tasks and gathering specific artifacts known as Lagniappes. The following is a complete guide to unlocking each ending.

Ending 1# What Just Happened (Edward Carnby)

To get Edward's regular ending, play the game as Edward Carnby. When you reach Chapter 5, proceed to the Conservatory, where a ceremony is taking place. Interact with the fountain and select "Wait for Emily".

This decision initiates a process in which Emily intervenes, resulting in a confrontation with the entity Shub-Niggurath. After slaying the creature, Edward, Emily, Jeremy, and Grace flee from the mansion, bringing the traditional tale to a close. 

Ending 2# Radical Acceptance (Emily Hartwood)

Similarly, to unlock Emily's regular ending, complete the game as Emily Hartwood.  In Chapter 5, during the Conservatory ritual, interact with the fountain and choose "Wait for Carnby". 

This choice triggers a storyline in which Carnby intervenes, culminating in a battle with Shub-Niggurath. Following the creature's demise, Emily, Edward, Jeremy, and Grace flee the mansion, reflecting the traditional ending. 

Ending 3# Secret Ending: "What Just Happened?" (Grace's Ending)

This secret ending may be unlocked by either character and requires obtaining the "All the World's a Stage" Lagniappe set.

Box of Biscuits: In Chapter 4, following the WW1 Trenches, visit the Flooded Morgue.  Restore power to the Old Archives chamber to locate this collectible on the desks. Only Emily has access to this item.

During Edward's Chapter 4, after crossing the French Quarter, look for the napkin at the motel's reception counter. This item is limited to Edward's playthrough.

Toy Talisman: Found on the floor of Dr. Gray's apartment in Chapter 4, both characters can obtain this item.

Proceed to Chapter 5 once you've obtained all three items.  Approach Grace near the tree in the Conservatory and offer her something to play with. This action sets off the secret ending, in which Emily and Carnby exit a theater and discuss the puzzling play they just saw, named "Alone in the Dark." 

Ending 4# Secret Ending: "One of the Thousand Young" (Edward's Alternate Ending)

To get this ending as Edward Carnby, complete the "A Goat Without Horns" Lagniappe set.

Preserved Reptile: In Chapter 1, in the beginning, look for 'The Conqueror' shop, where you meet Baptiste for the first time at the New Orleans level. This item can be collected by both characters.

Jangling Shaker: In Chapter 4, while continuing, you will visit the Grand Parlor and meet Ruth. The Grand Parlor will appear radically different once fully repaired. Look behind the bar to get the shaker.

After gathering these goods, proceed to Chapter 4 and interact with the Wishing Tree in the greenhouse. This action improves your aim by saying, "She will call you when it is time". Continue to Chapter 5.

During the Conservatory ritual cutscene, when Emily intervenes and time slows down, momentarily control Edward. On PC, hold down the "A" key to cause Edward to glance toward the tree, resulting in this alternate ending. 

Ending 5# Secret Ending: "Radical Acceptance" (Emily's Alternate Ending)

To get this ending as Emily Hartwood finish the "Dying with Dignity" quest.

Collectibles: Specific artifacts from this set are scattered throughout the game. Make sure to conduct a thorough investigation to collect all of the relevant pieces.

After finishing the set, in Chapter 4, while in Dr. Gray's Apartment, enter the side room where you discovered the Furniture Key. Examine the paint thinner next to the light and use it to expose the real painting that Jeremy attempted to hide. 

After beating Jacob and confronting the Dark Man, time will slow, allowing you to briefly control Emily. On PC, hold down the "D" key to make Emily lower her weapon and raise her left hand, indicating submission to the Dark Man, triggering this alternate ending.
