Metaphor: ReFantazio | Top 10 Followers
While almost all the characters are useful and unique, here are some of the best
Game Guide by Arne on Nov 05, 2024
Metaphor: ReFantazio is the newest JRPG on the block, and it comes with a roar of thunderous applause. One of the best gaming experiences and probably one of the best titles produced by Atlus, Metaphor: ReFantazio is, at times, a tough nut to crack.
Learning from titles such as SMT, you will easily realize that the game is harder than the famed Persona series. One similarity shared by all of them is the ability to have a few followers in your ranks that help you in your fights and more. Metaphor: ReFantazio has a very big list of these followers whom you will meet and befriend. In this list, you will find the top 10 followers based on their abilities, unlocks, bonuses, and, of course, their story.
Neuras
Neuras is also another quirky character who is unlocked relatively early. He is the game's take on the tinkering engineer who runs your Gauntlet Runner. His story progression is also pretty unique and fun, giving you a lot while not requiring much to do.
His progression is also pretty simple, although it takes a while to complete. Everything else remains pretty tame compared to the people further down the list. His main feature is unlocking the Gunner archetype and all the rank rewards he gives.
More
A follower you will unlock relatively early into the game, More is an enigmatic figure who stays in the Akademeia. From there, he guides you through your path while learning about the Archetypes. Dressed in all black, he lacks the personality of Persona's beloved Igor but makes up for it with flair.
More isn't too much of a standout from other followers; his main draw is his Rank 8 ability that increases an Archetype's status bonus by 3 while channeling. His conversations don't add much, but that's a part of his charm. He unlocks the Seeker Archetype, which is a decent Archetype, but there are better ones out there.
Brigitta
The tough merchant from Grand Trad is a tough and hard-headed character upon first meeting, but you quickly learn more from her, and as you complete her short side-quest, you get access to her shop. Her shop is very useful, making her 8th on the list, but that's not all.
Her bond stories are incredibly touching and not for the faint of hearts. To top it off, her unique rank rewards are passive boosts that work independently of her and invaluable bonuses for the protagonist.
Catherina
Also an inhabitant of Grand Trad, Catherina is a Paripus who sometimes helps you in your dungeons. You also fight her and get to know more of her. She is a rival of sorts at first and her story plays out in a great manner. Her Archetype is the Brawler.
Her rank-up rewards are also great, offering utility while going through dungeons and making sure you don't miss any of the treasures. Later on, when she gets to Rank 7, she'll even lend a hand from time to time.
Eupha
The proud priest from the Virga Isles is a key part of the storyline involved in that region and becomes a part of your party naturally. Her bond stories are a treat, and they really commit to the fish-out-of-water bit, which is doing really well.
You unlock her pretty early into the game, and she gives you access to the Summoner Archetype. The Archetype is great, but mostly at the hands of Eupha since it relies on MP. She's pretty useful and with her Archetype, versatile as well. You can heal, deal a lot of damage, and really have fun with summoning different monsters from various Atlus titles.
Basilio
Basilio is one of two party members that excel at one thing: Damage. His Archetype, the Berserker, is an apt name as it offers great damage when paired with Basilio. However, the Archetype is based on lots of low-damage hits and attacking numerous enemies. He's one of the few boss-busters in the game due to his ability to one-shot bosses near the endgame.
The only drawback is that his abilities and rank rewards are lackluster, and he unlocks them very late into the game. But despite that, his story will leave you idealizing the man and enamored by his spirit.
Maria
The young daughter of Grius, who himself was a great party member until his death. Her story and relationship with the protagonist is inspiring and an actual metaphor for loss and grief. Her story progression and rank-up system are also a unique touch that adds to her story.
She manages to grow a lot in her arc and remains one of the more rounded followers, offering both a great story and a good archetype: the healer. The Archetype itself isn't super noteworthy, and her rank rewards aren't great either, but that's fine because her story does more than enough to make up for it.
Hulkenberg
The poster-girl of Metaphor: ReFantazio, Hulkenberg is a loveable character. A fan favorite, she is a Roussainte, the game's version of elves. So, you know she's the best. She is hilarious and an all-around goof, somewhat contrary to her Archetype.
Her Archetype is the Knight, which is one of the best Archetypes in the game. She isn't the best follower by a long shot, but she gets the job done in the early and mid-game. You will rely on her tankiness and decent-ish damage.
Junah
A very talented and adorable singer who unlocks the Masked Dancer Archetype. Her Archetype is probably one of the most fun ones to play in all of Atlus' games, giving you the ability to copy the skills of other Archetypes.
Her character and story in-game are also great, but this far into the list, that goes without being said. Despite her great Archetype and overall good abilities, she isn't more than a support character at the party due to her low stats. She benefits a lot from the Warlord, so you probably want to switch to that once it's available.
Heismay
The little thief is an interesting figure. At first, you might think of him as a silly character, but he can soon become a powerhouse. He is unlocked relatively early as well, after a boss encounter. He gives you access to the Thief Archetype lineage. He is very much a glass cannon, but his ability to lower the enemy's hit and increase your evasion means that he will rarely actually get hit.
This does a very funny thing: One of the classes that isn't meant to be tanky suddenly becomes very tanky. That is not to mention his ability to take down single entities like bosses very easily.
His story is also extremely endearing. He has one of the best bond stories in the game, if not the best. He is a noble knight and a great father, and his story of bonding involves both aspects of his character.
Strohl
The first party member is aptly also the first on the list. He is an integral part of your party and a very influential member throughout the game. His presence is always there, although not always too flattering.
Sadly, his story is extremely lackluster, and his character comes off as almost one-dimensional. His bond storyline feels dull, too, and overall, his character doesn't go very far. He more than makes up for it through his role in combat.
Strohl is a beast in combat and is basically a requirement on the hardest difficulty. With the right playset, he becomes a one-hit god that can take on almost anything, even bosses. His Royal Archetype boosts this to another degree entirely. His strength is exceptional, probably the highest or, at least, the most notable in the game. His multi-attacks mean that even though you may have Eupha or Heismay doing more damage overall, he can probably take out bosses in one hit.
