In Windrose, you have to put things in your pockets, like plants and rocks nearly as soon as you get ashore. You can run out of space before you begin to construct your first ship. Luckily, you are able to expand the amount of what you can carry very early in the game. All the items you need to expand your space can be found right on the starter island.
This guide will demonstrate what bags you should create and how to make those additional slots alive as you are working.

Accessing the Accessories and Workbench
The Workbench is the most valuable tool in making more space. It is among the first items that you construct at your base, and it stores all the recipes to your equipment. In order to be able to unlock more slots, you must create bags and place them into the Accessories section of your character screen.
These additional slots are only kept active as long as you are wearing the bag. When you remove the bag, the additional space is gone in a flash. Always make sure that you leave your bag in that slot and do not lose space or time when you are out collecting.
Making the Torn Sailcloth Bag
Torn Sailcloth Bag is the first upgrade that will provide you with 4 additional slots. In order to make it, you have to collect Plant Fibers all over the starter island. These will be used to make 2 pieces of Coarse Fabric and 1 Rope at the Workbench. These sub-components you can make yourself so that you do not have to go out into the world and search them. After getting the fabric and rope, you can assemble them to complete your first bag.

Making the Sailor Backpack
In case you require a bit more space, you can upgrade to the Sailor Backpack which has a final total of 8 additional slots. The Torn Sailcloth Bag that you already made will be used as a base material in this recipe. You also need to hunt a Boar to get 5 pieces of Rough Hide. The last things you require are 2 Copper Ingots, which you obtained by smiting ore in the island, and smiting it in a Furnace.
Having this backpack will increase your inventory to 24 slots. With this additional room, it becomes a lot easier to bring what you need to travel fast and construct your ship.
