Naughty Dog, the powerhouse studio that gave us The Last of Us and Uncharted, is stepping into "uncharted" territory for what's being described as their biggest and most expensive game yet. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is that game. And if you're already raising an eyebrow, you're not alone.

Neil Druckmann, the studio's creative lead, recently talked about just how ambitious this new game really is. The team is "firing on all cylinders" and venturing into new possibilities, he clarified. For a studio that has delivered massive productions like The Last of Us Part I and Part II, that's saying a lot.

Troy Baker, the voice actor who brought Joel to life, is back on board for this project. Druckmann sounded genuinely excited to be working with him again, noting it's been five years since their last collaboration. Alongside Baker, the cast lineup is impressive, with other noteworthy names like Tati Gabrielle and Tony Dalton filling out the roster.

Let's rewind for a second now. After finishing The Last of Us Part II, Naughty Dog had some big decisions to make. It could have been The Last of Us Part III or even a revival of Uncharted. According to Druckmann, they seriously weighed those options. But in the end, the desire for something brand new pulled them toward Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

The game was officially unveiled during the 2024 Game Awards, shocking fans who weren't expecting a studio like Naughty Dog to make such a drastic shift in style. It's a big shift to go from the bleak scenes of a post-apocalyptic America to intergalactic bounty hunters chasing fugitives across space. The details are still thin, but it's clear that Naughty Dog has decided to step out of their comfort zone to try out a sci-fi setting

Now, before The Last of Us fans panic, Druckmann also said that this doesn't mean the franchise is dead. He's been very careful with his wording, hinting that while Part II could serve as the conclusion to the main saga, the universe itself is far from finished. And considering how profitable The Last of Us has been for Sony, they are not going to be willing to let go of that series anytime soon.

Let's not forget that the brand has already expanded beyond games into novels and the massively successful HBO adaptation. Druckmann teased that more things are happening within that universe, though he did not disclose many details. And truth be told, that's in everybody's best interests here.

Of course, now, when you mention The Last of Us, there's always going to be speculation. We could eventually see The Last of Us Part III. A spin-off focusing on Joel and Tommy in the early outbreak days, maybe? Fans are busy theorizing, and Naughty Dog, meanwhile, is back plotting their next move.

The question is no longer whether The Last of Us will continue, but in what form. It could be another big-budget mainline game, a comic, an animated project, or even a scaled-down multiplayer release; Sony has every reason to keep one of its most successful franchises alive.

For now, all eyes are on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Fans are curious and a little stunned—but let's be real, this is Naughty Dog. They've earned the benefit of the doubt. So, are you ready to see the studio behind Joel and Ellie trade survival horror for a sci-fi bounty hunter epic? Our eyes will be firmly set on Naughty Dog, no matter what they end up doing.
