Master every essential mechanic and upgrade in the new Cyberpunk 2077.
Game Guide by Monarch on Jul 27, 2025
Night City is back and bolder than ever. With a complete overhaul of its mechanics, systems, and progression, Cyberpunk 2077 in 2025 is a fundamentally redefined experience.
Whether you're diving in for the first time or returning after a long hiatus, this guide is tailored to help you quickly acclimate to the game's updated features and mechanics.
From choosing your character path to navigating its sprawling open world and mastering combat and Cyberware, this guide will give you all the information that you will need to survive, navigate, and make important decisions in the revamped world.

Getting Started in Cyberpunk 2077
You will play as V, a cyber-enhanced mercenary who wants to move up in Night City, a futuristic megacity run by gangs, corporations, and shady characters.
Before diving into the chaos, you'll first create your version of V using the Character Creator. This includes selecting your appearance, a Life Path (choose from Street Kid, Nomad, or Corpo), and assigning initial Attributes.
Life Paths not only influence how you're introduced to the world but also provide unique dialogue options and a quest exclusive to your background.
It's recommended to delay spending attribute points immediately—waiting allows you to preview the available trees and spend your points wisely later. If you're returning with an old save, don't worry—your attribute points can be redistributed once.
You can change V's appearance later at Ripperdocs and customize outfits at your apartment or local stores. You're never permanently locked into an early aesthetic choice.

Start Fresh or Phantom Liberty?
At the beginning, you'll have the choice to start the game from scratch or jump straight into the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Cyberpunk 2077 is best experienced as a whole, so new players should start from the very beginning. After the introduction is over, the world opens up and you can walk around freely. Just watch out for enemies marked with skulls; they are very powerful.

Night City's Districts
Night City features diverse districts:
The Badlands – A desert outskirts area, home to the Nomads.
City Center – Headquarters for corporations like Militech and Arasaka.
Haywood – Location of City Hall, home to The Valentinos.
Santo Domingo – An industrial area under the shadow of the Petrochem Dam, controlled by Sixth Street.
Watson – Turf of the Tiger Claws and Scavengers.
Westbrook – Includes North Oak, and is known for lavish lifestyles and up-and-coming Corpos and celebrities.
Pacifica and Dogtown – Controlled by the Voodoo Boys, Animals, and the Barghest Militia.
You'll traverse each district while progressing through the story. Dogtown becomes accessible through the Phantom Liberty expansion, which intertwines with the middle of the main game and unlocks new endings.

Open World Content
The world offers a variety of mission types. Main Jobs continue the primary storyline and are marked by black exclamation marks on the map.
Side Jobs offer optional narratives and content, marked with yellow exclamation points.
Gigs are tasks from Fixers, who connect you with clients and help you earn Eddies and Street Cred.
Gig types include Search and Recover, Agent Saboteur, SOS: Rescue, Thievery, and Special Delivery (cargo transport missions).
Cyberpsycho Sightings deal with citizens suffering from cyberpsychosis. You can incapacitate them for Regina, who's studying the condition, or eliminate them outright.
NCPD Scanner Hustles are spontaneous crimes. You can respond to assaults, suspicious activity, or thefts for rewards.
Vehicle Contracts from El Capitan involve stealing or hacking vehicles and are time-limited, so prioritize those with the wheel icon.

Perks, Skills, and Attributes
Your character is built through Attributes and Perks. There are five attributes: Intelligence, Tech, Body, Reflexes, and Cool.
Intelligence – Hacking and smart weapons.
Tech – Crafting, tech weapons, and cyberware capacity.
Body – Adrenaline and strength-based feats.
Reflexes – Mobility and weapon speed.
Cool – Stealth and knife-throwing.
Each perk tree has four tiers: Rookie, Pro, Phenom, and Legend, unlocked at 4, 9, 15, and 20 attribute points, respectively. Perks related to Vehicle Combat unlock early and are scattered across various trees.
Skills level independently as you use them. Running, hacking, and shooting—all contribute to specific passive progressions.

Cyberware and Ripperdocs
Upgrade V using Cyberware via Ripperdocs, surgeons who specialize in body augmentations. Cyberware can provide abilities like:
Sandevistan or Kerenzikov (slow time),
Gorilla Arms (enhanced punches),
Optical Zoom,
Scarab Skeleton (reduced damage while crouched).
Cyberware Capacity is limited by a yellow bar. With the Edgerunner perk (an homage to David Martinez), you can push beyond this into a red zone, trading health for more power.
Armor is now derived from cyberware, not clothing. So, managing both combat efficiency and capacity is crucial. Some perks even add more implant slots to your skeleton or hands.

Clothing and Fashion
Fashion is king in Night City. Clothing provides minor stat boosts but is mostly aesthetic. Transmog allows you to keep your stylish look while equipping the best armor underneath. For example, you can hide a helmet visually while keeping its armor stats.

Relic Skills
These skills are tied to Phantom Liberty and accessed by downloading data from Militech Terminals in Dogtown. Relic upgrades enhance Cyberware like Optical Camo, Mono Wire, Gorilla Arms, Mantis Blades, and Projectile Launch System.
They also unlock mechanics like EMP Explosions via weak point targeting.

Weapons
Weapons in Cyberpunk span across multiple types:
Damage Types – Chemical, Electrical, Physical, and Thermal, each inflicting different status effects.
Weapon Types – Power, Smart, Tech, Blade, and Blunt.
Power Weapons allow bullet ricochets. Tech Weapons can shoot through walls with charged shots. Smart Weapons home in on targets. Blades include katanas and throwing knives. Blunt Weapons include fists, bats, and hammers.
You can equip non-lethal mods to knock enemies out. Scopes, mods, and attachments add extra utility to your arsenal.
Crafting
Crafting no longer requires skill tree investment. Legendary Weapon Specs drop from bosses or can be bought. Materials from Tier 1 to 5 are obtained via looting. Crafted gear appears in a dedicated menu tab.

Grenades and Healing
Healing and grenades are now on cooldowns, not consumed in stacks. Perks can extend the number of uses before the cooldown begins. Equip better items automatically as they are looted. Healing options range from instant boosts to over-time regeneration. Grenades include frags, smokes, and special variants.

Netrunning and Breach Protocol
Breach Protocol allows hacking of enemy networks via a code mini-game. Success lowers hack costs or weakens enemies. Quickhacks are deployed via the Kiroshi Eye Scanner, using Cyberdeck RAM. Once RAM is depleted, you'll need to wait for it to recharge unless you spec into Overclock, which uses health instead.
Powerful combos are possible with the right Breach Protocol perks. If enemies are hacking you, hunt down the Netrunner quickly to sever the tether.
Stamina and Adrenaline
Stamina drains when swinging weapons or using mobility skills. It no longer depletes from sprinting. When stamina hits zero, actions are locked. Perks and skills can regenerate or reduce stamina costs.
Adrenaline, triggered by healing or the Blood Pump implant, grants an overshield that absorbs damage and decays over time.

NCPD, MaxTac, and Law Enforcement
Causing chaos raises your Wanted Level. In Night City, expect an NCPD response. In the Badlands, Militech handles law. In Dogtown, Barghest patrols.
Higher star levels summon:
1 Star – Foot patrols and squad cars.
4-5 Stars – Drones, mechs, weaponized vehicles, and eventually MaxTac.
MaxTac is the elite force of Night City, arriving in dropships with randomized high-level squads. You can escape the heat by hiding or using an identity-swapping cybernetic.
Vehicle Combat
Combat while driving is a core mechanic now. Use pistols, SMGs, or even katanas on motorcycles. Third-person auto-targeting is easier than first-person manual aiming. Target tires or gas canisters to end fights quickly.
Vehicles handle differently—find one you like. The Rayfield Caliburn is a great option found for free during the Ghost Town quest. Some vehicles even come equipped with missile racks or turrets.
Upgrade your vehicle with perks like Quickhacking other cars, ejecting mid-drive, or increasing vehicle durability.

Dialogue System
As a dialogue-driven RPG, decisions matter.
Yellow Options progress the story and lock you into paths. Blue Options provide context and background.
Life Path Options, Attribute-Gated Lines, Timed Prompts, and Icon-Based Actions further diversify conversations.
Choices are designed to be challenging. Go with your instincts, but be prepared for consequences.
Reading emails and files on terminals is highly encouraged. These often contain world-building details, Easter Eggs, and hidden content that reward exploration.
Returning or New, There's Much to Learn
Whether revisiting Cyberpunk 2077 after its transformation or discovering it for the first time, a deepening understanding of these expanded features will help in mastering every facet of the new experience.
Each mechanic, story arc, or system intricacy adds to the complexity and allure of Night City, ensuring a rich gameplay experience for every type of player.
