When you face Pentak in Esquie's Nest during Clair Obscure: Expedition 33, the fight can feel intimidating at first. If you're finding it hard to beat him, you're not alone.
The first time you face him, you might only manage to get him down to around 50% HP before he disappears, which makes timing and strategy essential to your success.
Preparing Your Party for the Battle
Make sure to improve your weapons before you start fighting. This is one of the main things that causes the damage to increase. You need to pay close attention to how your tool changes as you level up.
Look at the weapon's scale stats and choose the ones that work best with the way your characters are built. The most powerful grade you can get is what you want to find.
Don't forget to put on the better guns when you're done. It may seem clear, but it's simple to miss at the time. Make sure that at least two of your characters get these upgrades so that your team has enough offensive power during the fight.
Utilizing the Luminas Effectively
Upgrading your Luminas is just as important. Doing so allows you to equip more passives, which can significantly boost your team's strength. Head to the Luminas section and assign passives to your characters. Make sure you exhaust the cost of your available Luminas.
You don't want to leave any points unused. Each passive has a cost, and your goal is to spend every available point for maximum impact. If necessary, swap out current passives with better ones that suit this particular fight.
You can edit Luminas directly from the character menu, so there's no need to exit the area for this part. However, when it comes to upgrading weapons, you'll need to leave Esquie's Nest and return to the main continent or camp area to make those changes.
Navigating the Area to Reach Pentak
To find Pentak, go to the right and look for the yellow platform. This way will keep Pentak from getting away. Go straight, turn around if you need to, and get started fast. Don't let him go before the real fight starts.
Combat Strategy Against Pentak
Your primary goal in this fight is to stack damage as quickly as possible before he gets a chance to vanish. This means prioritizing actions that break his stance. Breaking his stance not only opens him up for more damage but also prevents him from taking his turn, giving you more opportunities to strike.
Parrying becomes your best friend in this encounter. Don't dodge. Try to parry every single attack. Even if you miss occasionally, the potential reward for a successful parry is enormous. A successful parry deals significant damage, and if it results in a critical hit, it can turn the tide of the battle.
Apply all the damage-increasing effects you have access to. Mark him, burn him, stack weaknesses, and anything else your team can do to lower his resistance and raise your output. You're not defending in this fight—you're going all-in on offense.
Managing Your Team's Actions
Your team should be working in synergy to break his yellow bar as fast as possible. When it's close to breaking, make sure to chain your strongest abilities. You want to delay his turn and create windows for back-to-back attacks.
Once his stance breaks, he loses his next turn. That gives you even more momentum. Activate abilities like overcharge during these windows to maximize your burst damage and potentially finish him off before he recovers.
You don't need to bring defensive strategies into this battle. Your focus should be entirely on maximizing raw power. With the right preparation—upgraded weapons, fully utilized Luminas, effective stance-breaking, and consistent parries—you can take down Pentak before he ever becomes a serious threat.
This approach is based on the party setup used here, but you can easily adapt it to your own team. The key is understanding how to delay his turn, capitalize on every opening, and hit him with everything you've got.
