In Subnautica 2, you need to unlock a specific mutation to be able to eat the local wildlife. At the start of the game, you are stuck eating your limited supply of manufactured food.

To change this, you need to advance the main story past the Welcome Center segment. Eventually, a signal for a Black Box will appear on your screen. This marks your third or fourth major objective.

Finding the Mutation Source

Follow the signal marker through the ocean until you reach the wreck site. Make sure to manage your Oxygen and grab any useful resources scattered around the area.

Once you find the Black Box, look around the top section of that same structure to see a weird jelly-like organism.

Unlocking the Ability to Eat

Approach the creature and stick your arm inside it. This is the same type of organism that helped you breathe earlier in your journey.

Interacting with this specific one triggers a mutation in your body. As soon as the process is done, your diet grows exponentially. You can now swim around, collect Plants, catch any native fish, and eat them to survive in Subnautica 2.
