Upgrading Weapons and Gear in Ghost of Yōtei is an integral part of progressing efficiently during the early stages of the game, and understanding how each Merchant and location functions will help you prepare for more advanced Upgrades later on.

Starting at Yote’s Shadow Inn

You will begin your Upgrades at Yote’s Shadow Inn, one of the central locations available early in the game. Upon arrival, some Merchants may not be present. You must progress through the story to unlock them. Once you have unlocked these Merchants, each will provide specific services for Gear, Weapons, and Resources in Ghost of Yōtei.

Upgrading Gear with Ginji the Armorer

The first key Merchant is Ginji, the Armorer. He handles Gear Upgrades, including improving Armor sets like Taro’s Armor. If you choose to upgrade Taro’s Armor to a +2 version, it will cost 650 coins. You can view how much currency you currently possess before confirming the Upgrade.

The Armorer also sells Armor Dyes, which require Flowers to purchase. For example, changing to a specific dye might cost 8 Flowers, and you can see the number of Flowers you own before making any purchases in Ghost of Yōtei.

If the Armorer is not available when you first reach Yōtei’s Shadow Inn, you will need to progress further. For some players, the Armorer appears after unlocking Taro the Scavenger.

Using Taro the Scavenger

When you unlock Taro the Scavenger, additional options become available. He offers Upgrades such as Ammo Capacity improvements, Weapon Kits, and more Armor Dyes. He also sells Charms. One recommended Charm for early gameplay is the Charm for the Dual Katana, which increases the Weapon’s damage slightly and costs 300 Coins in Ghost of Yōtei.

As you collect more Charms, you will unlock additional Charm slots. For example, you may need to collect two more Charms to open the next slot, giving you more room to equip different bonuses.

Purchasing Gear from Ran

Another important Merchant is Ran, who allows you to purchase and Upgrade Gear such as Bows. She offers Ammo Capacity Upgrades, Weapon Kits, and various Resources needed for ranged combat in Ghost of Yōtei.

Whenever you interact with her or any other Merchant, you can preview the next level of Upgrades. For example, advancing Taro’s Armor to level four increases maximum health and significantly reduces fire and cold damage. This preview lets you plan whether you want to invest in a specific Gear.

Upgrading Weapons at Father’s Forge

While most Gear Upgrades occur at Yōtei Shadow Inn, Weapon Upgrades require a visit to Father’s Forge, located in your home area at the start of the game.

At the forge, you can Upgrade Weapons such as the Wolf Blade or the Dual Katana. For instance, upgrading the Altered Katana requires 20 Metals and increases the Weapon’s damage output against enemies. If you lack the required materials, you will need to gather more before proceeding with the Upgrade in Ghost of Yōtei.
