Saving Sun Jian in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is challenging as it is part of the final battle in Chapter 3 for the Sun forces, and it requires great precision to win. If you followed the right sequence of events, his historical death at the hands of Huang Gai's ambush could have been avoided.

Historical Path vs. Alternate Path

On this historical path, you follow Sun Jian’s forces all the way to the castle gates, where Sun Jian dies under a boulder during an ambush. To unlock the alternate path and save him, you must act quickly, skipping unnecessary battles to reach him in time.

Start by sprinting through the Canyon and jumping over water obstacles. Ignore enemy officers along the way, as Sun Jian’s forces can hold their ground without assistance (at least on easier difficulties). This will save precious seconds.

When you reach the Gate, you’ll need to take out the enemy guarding it. Eliminating him also builds your bravery, which is crucial for the upcoming fight. Once the gate is opened, head inside and take the nearby base. The additional attack bonus for capturing the base will be helpful.

As you progress, Sun Jian’s forces will be ambushed by archers and pincered. Ignore this and rush to the left side of the map, defeating another officer near a gate. If you’ve been fast enough, you’ll have time to prepare your Musou bar and bravery before the key ambush begins.

The Fight to Save Sun Jian

When Sun Jian reaches the ambush area, a fog will appear, signaling the start of the critical fight. The enemy officer guarding the area has significant health, so focus on breaking his fortitude. Use your strongest items, such as those that boost attack or replenish Musou and bravery.

During the fight, prioritize constant damage over defense. Normal attacks are often more effective than heavy strikes, as they consistently break the enemy’s guard. If you’ve built up rage mode, use it for sustained damage, but avoid wasting Musou Attacks prematurely. Bravery-based attacks should be saved until the enemy’s fortitude is nearly broken.

The Final Push

After defeating the officer, make the call. Summon your horse (if the fury mode has ended) and dash through the remaining enemies. Avoid fights and head straight for Huang Gai to intercept him before he can reach Sun Jian; if you accomplish this, it will trigger the alternate cutscene where Sun Jian survives the assault.

Recovering Sun Jian is a mission that must be carried out at pace with planning and tactical execution. This can be done right and fast to change the course of history in favor of the Sun forces. Good luck!
